Thud!, the book

Having just read the book...twice through, I am astounded at its prescience. The jihadist Dwarfs, the "kin trumps friend" attitudes, the subtle nuances such as the obvious xenophobic villains (dumb trolls) were actually not the primary antagonists, whereas relatively sophisticated dwarfs fell for the romanticism of the dwarf Taliban with a sad, but recognisable, inevitability. Fabulous!

In my judgment Going Postal was very good but the characterisations in Thud! were of an entirely higher order. We shall be keeping our eye upon the young Mr Pratchett; uniquely amongst the august company of top fantasy writers he seems to manage to improve upon his previous output. Long may this continue.

Hmmm, indeed! The development of Vimes as a character has gotten very deep indeed. And art theft in big cities aligns London and Berlin closer to Ankh-Morpork in more unusal ways than previously. A fabulous read!

Having read this book for the second time, I can safely say its one of his best of the lot so far. Vimes is really developing as a character,as are most members of the watch and the world itself is also changing, with the dwarf-troll rivalry apparently clearing up.

I'm impressed by Pratchett's willingness to do this- it is one of the cornerstones of life in ankh-morpork, at least from a narrative sense, and it's a brave move to develop it further. On the other hand, I can easily see this thread becoming not a destruction of a facet of city life, but an addition of several new ones. Pratchett is a brilliant author, and he done good.

Him diamond.

ROIGHT!

I agree. I wondered where the watchmen and particularly Old Stoneface would go after Night Watch, so I couldn't wait to get stuck into this. I was not disappointed (not that I ever have been by a Discworld book!) I always feel sorry for Vimes when he gets caught in what orginally appears to be a 'simple' crime which rapidly turns political on him.

One thing to say. WHERE'S MY COW

One race is made of rock, the other race is made of miners....

I was also amused by the similarities between the Koom Valley Codex's popularity and the hysteria over The DaVinci Code in recent months and years.

The Dark

Its kinda freaky, but a stain in my bathroom looks almost identical to The Summoning Dark. I'm beginning to worry.....

Laughing I know the feeling, I kept thinking I saw it in stuff for a while. Thud's one of those books that gets right into your head if you get into it heavily!

Great read, loved every minute of it. Was lucky really, had Going Postal bought for my birthday in december, devoured that and craved more... got Thud for Christmas Smile

The recent books just get better and better. Thief of time, Nightwatch, Postal and Thud have all been outstanding books for me. All ranking in my top discworld picks...

Yep, nothing better than a good guards book to get stuck into. I think this was one of the better books in the Discworld series, and very pertinent considering our current international situation. The characterisation, particularly with Vimes, is outstanding, and aforesaid Vimes is made all the more real and human with the worries over his life and of course, his young son.
However, I do not believe this is the best Discworld or, indeed, the best guards book in itself. I enjoyed immensely the previous guards book to this, night watch, as it seemed far more linear and re-readable. Also the placing of Vimes in a strange but all-too-familiar environment and how he masters it is an excellent writing tool, one that makes Pratchett one of the best writers of our time. Sorry if i sound old, i'm not really.

Where's my cow?

this truly is a genius book. i was slightly suprised that pratchett gave vimes a son this early on, but i think that little addition has changed vimes into an alot more deeper character than ever. it also begs the question, what will happen when his son grows up? will he join the watch? will he be a rebel casting vimes into more troubled water. i can't wait.

oh and i also looked at wheres my cow? in a book shop somewhere and thought it was a little childish (i now its a kids book but hey). i may buy it some day over the internet, as it is a little embarasing buying a kids book at my age. Very Happy

Or you could yell 'BIKKIT!'

Druid

BIKKIT!!

Actually I want it for my Daughter Laughing

I wonder why it doesn't mention the book in his list at the front of Thud?

Maybe he's embarrassed, I still haven't found a copy of the unadulterated cat either.

I just finished reading Thud yesterday, and the weekend before finally got around to using the Thud set I got for Christmas. It was intriguing reading about this game and its part in the plot. I was depressed by the number of orthographic errors. Mr. Pratchett is normally more carefully about those sort of things. Thud was a very good read, though. HRRUUUUGH! That is not my cow!
It developed not only Vimes but also Angua, Cheery, and Detritus, and even Willikins as characters. The Summoning Dark got really spooky at times.
I must say that I did like Going Postal better, and I love Moist von Lipwig. I enjoyed the little refrerences to the previous novel while reading Thud.

Oh indeed! Do read them all! You must dissuade yourself of any pretense that these are children's books; don't let the marketing patter fool you Very Happy

hello

I read WHERE'S MY COW for my kids. they didn't like it, and I was devistated.

I am also wondering why Sam Vimes lookes like my grandfather.

I have a brain and can prove it, look in the Jar.

I bought Where's my cow for my son. The fact that he wasn't born yet, dosn't sound suspicious does it? I must say I got some funny looks from my wife when I was yelling "Where's my cow!" into her belly.

In my humbble opinion you don't get the full effect reading Thud without also reading Where's my cow.

I got it for my birthday, it arrived wednesday. And my son isn't even a twinkle in his mothers eye yet, nor is his mother known. But I do agree, reading it does add to "Thud!".
