Re: crazy names
in my country there is a little town called kakamas, which is funny cos kak is shit in afrikaans.there's also a town called pofadder, and even one called tweebuffelsmeteenkoeldoodgeskietfontein, which basically means that at some point or other in the past, a guy shot two bulls with one bullet and they erected a fontain there.

Re: crazy names
None of those are really any competition for "Djelibeybi" or "En al Sams la Laisa"... (You can tell somebody's just been re-reading Jingo).
Not to mention Bad Ass.

"Tiddles!" bellowed Moist. He wished he hadn't. It was such a stupid name to shout in a burning building.
An explosion of soup made the bumblebee fly, so I'm told.

Re: crazy names
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch translates as "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".
The Guiness book of records lists "Taumata whaka tangi hanga koauau o tamatea turi pukakapi ki maunga horo nuku poka i whenua kitana tahu" (92 characters) as the longest place name in the world - it's a small town in New Zealand which translates into English as "The brow of the hill where Tamatea, with the bony knees, who slid and climbed mountains, the great traveller, sat and played on the flute to his beloved."
"Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit" (163 characters!!), meaning the 'City of Angels', is known to the locals as Krungthep Mahanakhon. The rest of the world knows it as Bangkok, Thailand. However, it is not recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the longest place name as it is not used on a daily basis by the locals.

I know it, you put one too many "go"s in, the end is just "gogoch" and i dont think there would be 4 "L"s in a row as that would sound like "chlchl" or something...
Re: crazy names
OK, the definative:
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyllllantysiliogogogoch
and yes it does have a quadruple "L"

Re: crazy names
Where I come from there's a place called slonovo dupe, which translates as elephant's ass.
And I'm not kidding.
It's actually a spring that emerges from a rock that looks like, well, an elephant's ass, and one thing leads to another...
And it's even funnier in Serbian, because dupe is by no means a euphemism. It's probably the rudest word to signify the 'place where your back loses its honuorable name' as we say.

Obviously there arent enough New Zealanders on this site, someone from somewhere else got to that one first.
Re: crazy names
Well, I wanted to write that one down as well, but a Thai last told me there is an even longer place name (translated into roman letters):
Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit
In short it is just Bankok
It translates roughly to:
The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.
(not that i know any Thai, this is just what I've been told)
