Difficulty connecting to thudchat

This problem first came up yesterday afternoon, I think.
I say "I think" because the first time I only noticed it was taking particularly long for the applet to load - the screen stuck on the Java loading window, and I assumed that something was probably being tweaked and that therefore it didnt need looking aat too deeply.

However, today I noticed the same trouble, so I left the applet loading and eventually got the normal chat screen. However, the following error messages came up:

Welcome to Thudgame. Connecting...
-- Connection to 217.155.157.36 failed ! --
-- Reason: 'NORMAL' EXCEPTION
-- Exception info: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out

-- Connection to 217.155.157.36 failed ! --
-- Reason: 'NORMAL' EXCEPTION
-- Exception info: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out
Connection lost. Reconnecting...

The red lines were then repeated, at a rate of about once a minute (my estimate, quite possibly inaccurate)
I also tried to connect in hdebug, and got these errors:

Welcome to Thudgame. Connecting...
DEBUG: Beginning of connect. wf=0
-- Connection to 217.155.157.36 failed ! --
-- Reason: 'NORMAL' EXCEPTION
-- Exception info: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect

DEBUG: Beginning of connect. wf=0
-- Connection to 217.155.157.36 failed ! --
-- Reason: 'NORMAL' EXCEPTION
-- Exception info: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect
Connection lost. Reconnecting...

With the red lines again repeated, at a similar rate.
These errors occured on both my Mandriva and XP boxes

Sorry about that. Apparently, using iptables to prevent people from connecting to the server on port 8080 means they can't connect to the server on port 8080.

Blame Lee for it happening in the first place, but blame me for not reading this forum earlier and fixing it. It meant that when Lee went to Wincanton to demo it to Bernard and Trevor, we looked silly because they couldn't connect Smile

Fixed now though - and again, sorry 'bout that Smile

Just to add to Dewi's comment and give a quick update: he's busy re-coding ircd (from the ground up if the swearing is any measure of the hassle being had with the morass of code that is ircd!) to disable identd-auth amongst other things. When it's stable we'll be porting it over to our big monster server with the rivers of bandwidth. This will mean we can support thousands of concurrent games (knocks on wood, crosses fingers and pushes thumbs [Daumen drucken for our German readers Wink Cool ] hoping it all works....) and connecting to the server will take less than a second.

This will also mean we will be able to play as ourselves rather than as guestXXXX. Check back for client updates but we will be making a public announcment at that point as it will be the 1.0 release of Online Thud.

Now off to start building the Thudguild site Very Happy

these same errors are back. It's possible that this is something to do with my upgrade from Mandriva 2005 -> 2006, but I think I've managed to get on since the upgrade. I just cant remember for sure.
