Sally and the fish

one day Sally was at school and it was time for drawing class,so the teacher set all the children to drawing pictures.Sally was really happy because she really enjoyed drawing,so she gets started on a really detailed picture of a fish.

The teacher walks through the class and takes a look at all the pictures, and when she gets to Sally she says "Sally,is that your picture?" and Sally says yes,so the teacher says 'is that a picture of a fish' and sally says 'yes'.

The teacher gets really ngry and shouts at Sally, saying "Get out of my class this instant!!"

So Sally got up from her seat and gathered her things and left the classroom. She had nowhere to go,so she sat in the hallway.

A prefect just happened to be walking by,and asked her why she was outside and not in the classroom,so she told him that she was kicked out by the teacher. The prefect asked her why,and she said that she drew a picture of a fish. The prefect couldn't believe what he ws hearing,he got so angry that he sent her to the principals office.

The principal, being a busy man, kept her waiting for about 25 minutes before letting her in to see him.He asked her why she was there, and she told him that the prefect sent her there, and when the principal asked why,she said it was because she was out in the hall during class time without a hall pass. Why was she out in the hall?Because the teacher sent her there because she drew a picture of a fish.

'A FISH!!!!' the principal screamed.'This is OUTRAGEOUS,i can't have this in my school'he said."Get out of my school right NOW!!!You're expelled!!'

So Sally gathered her things once again and left the school. She walked home and when she got there her mother was busy doing the dishes(like a good housewife). Her mother asked her why she was home so early, and Sally told her that she'd been expelled, when her mother asked why,she told her mother the story about how she drew a picture of a fish.

Her mother got very angry and sent her up to her room to wait until her father got home. When her father got home Sally could here voices downstairs which steadily rose in pitch. She heard footsteps as her father walked up the steps. The father knocked on the door and Sally said 'come in'.The father came inside and his face was very red,he was angry.'Is it true?' he asked her 'about the fish?'

'Yes' she said. The look of disappointment on his face was unbearable.'i can't have this in my household' said the father,'i want you out of this house,NOW!!!'

So Sally gathered all her possessions and left the house, never to come back again. She was walking along the sidewalk at around 7pm can be dangerous,so she was pulled over by the cops. One of them asked 'Little girl, what are you doing out on the streets at this time of day? It's dangerous out here.' So she told them the story of how she came to be on the sidewalk by drawing the picture of a fish. The policemen were so angry with her that they took her to jail for 10 years.

When she finally made it out,she walked across the street and got run over by a car.

What's the moral of the story?

Re: Sally and the fish

There can be no moral in the sense of a universal truth applicable to all, in any situation, universe or culture. To quote the Hogfather (ex-tempore): "You can grind up the universe to its constituent particles and you will not find an atom of mercy or a molecule of justice." Taking this as one's presupposition, the events within the story are unremarkable as morals are as arbitrary within cultures and gov'ts as what one decides to wear in the morning.

Therefore there must be another view to the story. It appears to follow a Nietzschean dynamic insofar as all who had power in the story (everyone but Sally) chose to exercise it to Sally's detriment. Interestingly no one chose to explain why this is, which may, or may not, mean the reason is/was common knowledge. This aspect is vaguely Kafkaesque. Still Nietzsche would say Sally didn't have the power and didn't choose to take sufficient power thus what happened is the logical result of that.

Pseudo-modernists such as Ayn Rand along with (interestingly) post-modernists from Soeren Kierkegaard to Michael Foucault would strongly argue that the end result of Nietzsche is always dictatorship and tyranny, thus the focus of any decent society is preserving the privacy (hence the individual decisionmaking ability) of the person, creating a culture in which the person is protected through structural institutions from authority, not just potentially repressive authority.

Thus, given a society in which an individual's expression, the reception of which is totally voluntary from the position of the observer, is persecuted or criminalised, the moral can only be that the structural chains of repression are so great that they permeate all of society. therefore a solution that combines the two opposite views above into a synthesis of action is necessary.

Or, to put it in other words, quoting Public enemy:

"Fight da powers dat be!"
