Site Fiction

Admin

So we were just on the game client (Myself, Iron, DBES, Ratdeath and a guest) and it all kicked off. Iron opened the bar, passed out drinks and not 30 seconds later a brawl the Mended Drum oould have been proud of kicked off with some lovely narrative and heroic prose. I may ask Dewi to recover the text from the Thud DB; it was excellent.

But it got me thinking, if that group of us can come up with some funny stuff just off the cuff like that I;m sure there's some latent talent waiting to be discovered out there in forum land. So what are some ideas to encourage this talent to manifest itself?

Group story projects?

A contest?

Extra points for winning contest?

Answers here....

Re: Site Fiction

Bronze MemberLibrarian

oh, yes it was fun.
do you mean group story project as in someone starts a story, someone else writes a sentence, then someone else another sentence? those are fun, i already thought of opening one once, but didn't do it though i don't remember why.
and what kind of contest?

Re: Site Fiction

I think a thread was started ages ago with that intention, but it didn't get very far... I may be misremembering - it might've been somewhere else - but I think it happened.

That of course is the problem: when you try to put in a structure to pick up spontaneous genius, the very presence of the structure removes the spontaneity.

Re: Site Fiction

That was fun, real cool.
I was thinking of posting some of these role-play's or site fictions's on a thread or topic or whatever they're called. Cant you do something so that we can copy-paste the discussions from the chat room? Sorry, if its a stupid question, but im not very experienced with computer stuff...
And you can only post site fictions if youre involved in them, and the ones involved in the best site fiction (wich is voted by us, the users) get extra points!

I don't know half of you as well as i should like, and i like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Re: Site Fiction

Druid

that would be cool

like i say..there was a man...

someone else says he was called bob!

it could be the next big thing!

Re: Site Fiction

quite a cool idea, although my only problem would be that if we did some sort of forum like that then everyone would be waiting online to write the next line, and then you'd have many different comments for each line and it'd get confusing.

so what i suggest is that we should team up in groups, and each group creates a story and then you guys(gods)can judge which is the best,or you should join in as well.

i reckon that all the peoplewho want to try this thing should sign up with you guys (maybe you could set up a forum or something) and then you guys could randomly sort us into groups of like 3 and we could go from there.

but then the stories would have to be kinda private so that other groups don't steal ideas.

Re: Site Fiction

You mean we should form into these groups and each group has its own forum and on that groups forum we post these site fictions?

Re: Site Fiction

Bronze MemberLibrarian

sounds good, but i'd prefer more than three people in a group. four or five?
plus we'd have to make an order. let's say it's me, ook, angua and umm, the sarge in a group. no, the marrow, if it was ´the sarge we'd never come to an end. then we should not post in a random order so it ends up ook - marrow- ook - marrow etc. but always ook - angua - marrow - me -ook -angua.... just as an example

Re: Site Fiction

ok, group forming! whos in my group?

we could form groups this way, or someone (ponder, Lee, someone) could form them.

--

I don't know half of you as well as i should like, and i like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Re: Site Fiction

Bronze MemberLibrarian

i think it's better if someone else forms them. i think i'll start a topic where everybody who wants to join the funcan say aye or me or whatever ; ). and then some (i think it would be best if someone does it who won't be in a group) can form groups.

Re: Site Fiction

Yes but someone should form the groups who knows the personality of the people put groups so he can form good combinations.

Re: Site Fiction

Bronze MemberLibrarian

i think it might be very interesting if people who are completely different are in one group. we could also throw a dice if there's no one who wants to form the groups.

i postet a topic now (who wants to join the forum story writing thing?).

how would we throw dice?

i think lee or dewi should do it,even if they are a part of it as well.

Re: Site Fiction

Druid

ok, i propose an idea for you: which i am willing to do.

everyone who wants to be in - PM me, I will sort the groups into peopl who i think will work well together and then you privately PM each other in your groups the next bit of the story. i will then ask one from each group to email/pm me the final thing and i will publish them here and will get us druids/gods etc to have a glance through and say which one wins...

anythoughts?

you have 2 days Very Happy to decide on a plan

Re: Site Fiction

ok,but if there're more than 2 people in a group then will everyone in the group have the full story?that means that, for example,if there're 3 people in a group then each person will have to post their piece of the story to both partners each time, and so on and so forth.that's a bit of a bother, and that could mean that things would go out of order,it's bound to happen sometime.i'm not saying it won't work,i'm willing to try,but sometime or other, heads are gonna roll.

AND IT'S GONNA BE YOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Could I bring in my right honourable colleague from the high energy magic building? I think Ponder has a good idea for this that might work. Smile

This would indeed be the best way to do it. Unfortunately I have good news and bad news on that front: the bad news is we can't do it this way at the moment unless we drop all the ongoing development, putting off delivering all the other cool stuff we're working on. The good news is we will be upgrading the site soon(ish) and all that will be nicely built in courtesy of our open source development team. Shall we give Ponder's idea a go, and this summer or so we can go with private development forums like ook has suggested. Very Happy

i don't think you'd have to pm the whole thing to all partners every time. person 1 could write the beginning, pm it to person 2, who writes a sentence or two and pms it to person 3, who adds a bit and then sends it to person4/person1, depending on how many people there are in a group. so let's do it!

Re: Site Fiction

Yep thats right guys! the competition is only a bit of fun, and amazing writing skills aren't required!

so: go here and sign up, read the rules first! at the moment we have barely enough people to start a competition
