Well, as almost every forum topic seems to turn to discussing school sooner or later, I will just open this topic where you can talk about school systems and subjects without getting of topic, ok?

Re: School

hi, i don't actually go to school anymore but i say the aussie system while terrible at eductaion for various reasons is rather more logical than the brit "system"
I am also curiousabout the american SAT and why you take A 1HR MCQ TEST!? each one of my exams was 3hrs which is standard bar english which is 2, 2hr exams. that's 22hrs of exams...with minimal multiple choice

Re: School

umm, ok. I think I'll just tell ya about the German system, which is very illogical:
You start school with 6 or 7 years. After year four you go to either (depending on your grades) the 'Hauptschule', 'Realschule' or 'Gymnasium'. The Hauptschule ends after year 9, after that you can either continue on another school or become an apprentice. The Realschule lasts one year longer, then same procedure like after the Hauptschule. The Gymnasium lasts 'till year 13 (you can quit earlier though). in year 10 you write zks, which means zentrale klassenarbeit (umm central exams or something like that). you write them in german, maths and your first foreign language and they count as 2 exams (each). in year 13 you write the 'Abitur' which is like the a-level.
exams are spread over the year. you write 4 in the main subjects (german, maths, languages) and 2 in the other subjects.
lessons last 45 minutes each, but sometimes you have double lessons. the exams are written in normal lessons (or sometimes double lessons), only zks and the abitur exams take longer.
a school day starts at 7.40 in the morning and ends at 12.50 (6 lessons). you usually got up to three days with afternoon lessons a week, which means you've got two more lessons from 1.45 till 3.20. in year 12 and 13 it can also happen that you've got 2 more after that.
in some bundesländer you've got to hold one GFS a year (in year 12 and 13 it's 3 together). that's a presentation. it counts like one exam. you can choose the subject and the topic.
umm, i think that's it. stupid, isn't it?

thanks for doing that! saved me a job...

the english system:

optional nursery school 2-4

lower "primary" school - 4-11

secondary school - 11-16
sixth form (sometimes part of secondary school) - 16-18
College 16 -

universtiy 18-

so quite simple

lol yay us!
i don't like school. most of my teachers are really stupid. and then there's this one teacher who heads our english drama group (which i am member of). he's a real idiot and my worst nightmare. i actually really do have nightmares with him. : (

i never really enjoyed school. but on the other hand it didn't dislike it either. it was just something that if i ignored and got on it would go away.

but then i got to sixth form, which i really really enjoyed. and then UNI, which of course is amazin!

Re: School

back home, when my parents were at school, primary was yrs 1-8 and high school was 4 yrs. you could go to a technixcal high specific to your subject wants of to a general high. Every lesson they would have feleles which is when the teacher selects random people to answer random questions like giving a speech about this or that or proving a formula on the board or forming geographically correct mountainranges in a sandbox. and every day the teacher would assess those that were called upon and at the end of the year your marks incorporated that.

Re: School

for me a rather unpleasant part of school is the fear of being asked something. Not in every lesson, but in Spanish for example. I've got problems with learning and using spanish and so i usually can't answer questions there. not very nice.
