If you have (or, have had...) a look at the userpoints page you'll notice a hefty increase in the Thudpoints many people have. We promised retroactive awarding of points and with fear and trepidation we made the upgrade this morning! ![]()
There is also a more robust points system in place and now the following is the amount of Thudpoints that can be won by posting content.
in alphabetical order:
Points for posting a biography: 5
Points for posting a blog entry: 1
Points for posting a book page: 1
Points for posting a book review: 15
Points for posting a event: 1
Points for posting a forum topic: 2
Points for posting a help tip: 5
Points for posting a image: 1
Points for posting a movie review: 10
Points for posting a page: 1
Points for posting a poll: 1
Points for posting a story: 1
Points for posting a comment: 1
Points for moderating a comment: 0
Points for referring a user: 2
Points for inviting a user: 2
Points when invited user registers: 5
We generally try to award points in relation to their value o the site (e.g. invites, help tips) and the effort required (e.g. book reviews). We've assigned these arbitrarily and we would welcome discussion on them from the community. So what do you all think of all this.
Note 1: Dewi has completed the database upgrade and is working on the game client upgrade to award Thudpoints for playing Thud on the online client. How many points should be awarded for playing a game, and how many for winning?
Note 2: We will be bringing the shops into this site and some things will be able to be bought using Thudpoints so the incentive wil be there to get lots of points as will be site currency. At some point (heh!
Thudpoints will be taxed by your settlement to discourage hoarding and encourage earning on an ongoing basis.
Note 3: there was something else but I've forgotten.... was up late working...
So whadda you all think??

damn....
On the live thud gamey points thing you mentioned as well:
3 points win, 2 points each for a draw, 1 point for just playing. or a system to that effect. i think it is vital that you still get points for trying...coz im a nice person really - no matter what lee tries to tell you

Heh!
We agree Ponder! points for playing encourages people to play (we hope
) so points will be awarded for playing a game. The thing is how many for playing? How many for winning?
Now, if you play a forum game, you could amass anything up to 70 or 80 points for a game. Should the online game be less? We don;t think so as we would rather people play online but we understand temporal displacement--Magrat insists on living in the USA and Windle Poons in Oz--so being able to play online isn't always convenient but should become moreso the more people join the site. Nevertheless, 3 points for a win doesn't seem very much. What do others think?

points for games
I'd suggest that ideally, rather than bringing the number of points you get for a live game up, it might well be worth bringing the number you get for forum game down - maybe to 20-25. However, I suspect that from a coding point of view that would be by far the hardest option... hmmm...

...or impossible as we have the problem that you get at least 1 point for every post to the forums thus a forum thud game might run for quite some time (magrat and Mazur have scooped 80 some odd ponts each for their game) but we want people to play the online game so this way we can create a bit of equity between the two. You can earn points faster online, you can earn more per-game playing on the forum.
At the end of the day we want people to 1) play Thud, 2) talk about stuff as a community, and 3) buy stuff (some of which can be bought with points) so we want to use the points system for encouraging all of that. The most important is using the game, followed by discussion as a way of earning points.
As for the number of points, maybe think of them as dollars which aren't worth very much right now so you'd need more of them

Re: points for games
I feared as much - we're never going to get round the problem that most posts to the forums are longer, more thought-out, and (I'd argue) contribute more to the community than most single-move posts in forum Thud are... That's not to say that I dont think having forum games that people can view is important, just maybe not 40 times as important as an exposition of the Poons offensive in the Strategy forum
Mind you, once you start going down that road things like the word-assosciation game thread would only merit a point for every 5/10 posts, and so on - each post would have to be judged for it's importance, and that becomes mad... hmmm.... Unless, perhaps, it was community-assessed: have a "thumbs up" button by each post and if a user thinks it's particularly good they click and an extra point or 1/2 point goes to the user who came up with the original post...
These thoughts are all very well, but if there was gonna be any chance of them being usable I needed to think of them weeks ago
And I might be talking nonsense anyway...
Better end there before it gets any more complicated

Re: points for games
I don't see why Forum Thud can't have a different point scheme than every other forum. Would that be too hard? The scheme could be simple. Every forum post gets a point, except Forum Thud posts get .1 (one-tenth) point. People should get credit for playing, but not too much.
I'm the big winner on the current system, but it seems silly to me. It's only that way because it's 2 a.m. where you are when I'm ready to play Thud.

A bit. The fora (nods to the Sarge
) are really only one forum; the divisions are presentational only simply for classification of content for people to drill down thru them more easily/efficiently. But even on individual forum platforms such as vBulletin and phpBB it's a pig separating out an individual forum for special treatment in this way. However, Scrubby had a possible solution which I'll post on the new thread...

Jézus Márjám! How do i post a book reveiw? or do you mean that you would go through and check each post to see whether it is a help tip or review and modify their points or add a button saying "I am a book review" and opt for the honour system or what. @ 30 discworld books thats 450 points! Ook here I come!

тавариш, пажалстьа. surely enough points are earned by just playing the game and the reward for winning is experience and braging rights. but I'd say 2 points for a victory is good. unless such a client does not award points like slowfire. in which case i think 1 pt per move is good as the longer a game takes the more cunning the players or equally incompetent but the point is the intensity of the struggle to win which should be rewarded not the victory itself or just the attempt.
Note 2: We will be bringing the shops into this site and some things will be able to be bought using Thudpoints so the incentive wil[l] be there to get lots of points as[ they] will be site currency. Grrrrrrrr! Thudpoints should NOT be a tender, they should be an indication of your level of activity or rather a points/day average should be. and all "heavy users" (say 2pts/day on average) should be given an allowence of AM$ per week as long as they keep up their points average.
YOU ARE NOT TOUCHING MY POINTS
