New User Account Info

Admin

Interestingly, I've just deleted 50 members from the user list. Don't worry they weren't people who were interested in contributing to Thudgame but were rather more interested in promoting their free-stuff site, their porn movie sites or, the new thing it seems, is to grab lots of pagerank quickly for a new site that's up for sale as a popular site with lots of traffic (artificially produced of course). all of these users have been blocked (their accounts frozen) within hours of them registering. We keep a close watch on this.

It's interesting that people want to do this because the only place one can place their URL (web adress) is on their user profile. No one (including Google) can see these unless they're logged in. For those only interested in getting a bit of pagerank from us, forget it; it doesn't work. For those from the military junta in Myanmar-- both of your memberships were deleted in the big tidy. Felt good doing it too! Very Happy

For new users (and those who have lurked for a bit), it's best to get to know us, post a few things and, at least introduce yourself, then big-up your personal projects (see Oograh Boike's posts to see what I mean). We may look closely at eBay auctions you post unless we know you or they're Discworld related but if you have a website, tell us about it! Let us know what you're about-- we're interested! Really. We aren't scary unless you want to post spam Smile

Several of the people who's user accounts were deleted seemed innocuous but posted URLs that were simply holding sites that were merely search pages. Some of these may have been legitimate holding sites that their domain registrar put up as the default (note to the wise: this can risk a permanent ban on your site from Google!). Some, however, led to redirect pages for sites featuring certain male enhancements, pills to help with certain male deficiencies, and sites featuring scantily clad women offering more to see for negotiable monetary consideration. In the end I deleted all of them. Perhaps some of the users were innocently duped by their registrar. If so, a further word to the wise: if your site is one of these holding pages, wait until you have uploaded your own webpage then post it to your Thudgane profile.

I feel bad deleting user accounts when I feel some (mind you a very few!) might possibly be legitimate; even when the overwhelmingly vast majority are dodgy. Therefore I felt we should have this guidance on the site to prevent some being inadvertently tarred as spammers when they may simply be naive about certain aspects of Internet reality. Before registering your account, please take heed of the above and if in doubt always feel free to ask us.

Many thanks!
