What do the little hyphens mean in the topics lists?

Founding PatronBronze Member

(Maybe what we need around here is a FAQ...not that anyone has ever asked this question before!)

I have been waiting for the little hyohens next to the topics in the lists to reveal their secret to me, and so far they haven't. Topics recently posted to? Topics I've read? Topics I haven't read? Topics other people haven't read Very Happy ? I give up.

Topics with new comment you haven't read yet, as far as I can tell.

Well, Lee wants to know what little hyphens I am talking about, and I came to take a screen shot and ....they're gone! Presto, changeo! I realize now that they come and they go - I don't always see them. But OB sees them too, so it's not little floating things in my eye, at least. Next time I see them, I will steal their soul and send a pic to the appropriate authorities. Or maybe OB could.

I did.
The hyphens are in forum only, which I don't use much anymore. I find the "recent site posts" link in the left side menu extremely helpful in finding topics that have recently had comments. It's the first thing I click every time I get in here.

Thanks to OB and Magrat for the offline graphics describing what Magrat meant. I wasn't sure about the hyphens but looking at the graphics and closely comparing them to the forums I finally figured out they were marking the topics that had content (topic itself, or comments about it) that hadn't been read.

I had never seen them as all of the forums had been marked as read by the cookie I get served up by the system thus I was puzzled about these hyphens other people saw but I didn't Wink

But, yes, OB had it right. They point out which forums have content you haven't read yet Very Happy
