The Poons Offensive - Revisited

Bronze Member

I've been thinking lately that there are other ways to hold off a Poons Offensive than those discussed here and here. So I'm trying to encourage a little bit of collaboration as I puzzle out what might be yet another way to block the once-ultimate tactic... These days, I've seen a lot fewer people 'forming the baseline,' and I'd like to think that I had a hand in that movement. One day, I might even get a strategy named after me, too... Very Happy

Here's what I've been looking at so far:

1. d A6 - J14
T J9 - J10

What has always been advocated has been
2. d G15 - H15
on the grounds that it defends L12, and once I suggested
2. d M13 - J13
on the grounds that it puts immediate pressure on the advancing trolls. However, what happens if I do this instead?
2. d M13 - H13

Anyone want to suggest the next logical Troll move against such an approach?

The Troll Stroll, first used by Palm in a game against me, and later dubbed Troll Stroll by Mr Scrub:

2. d M13 - H13 T J10 - K11

after which the Troll walks right in.
There's no defense that I know of against it, other than

2. d G15 - H15

but that brings us back to the Poons problem, and it helps only in this situation. With

1. d A6 - J14 T H9 - J10

the only course of action is either running, or defend with

2. d D13 - L13

after which you are faced with

2. ------ T J10 - K11

a Troll Stroll you do not have any defenses against.
Not very good news for dwarfs, is it?

My ears are burning!!!

Can you imagine , when future thudders meet in person...

"So, right, I was playing dwarfs you see, and that scunner, played a Poon's Offensive, and then he followed it with a Palm Troll Stroll. I didn't get a chance to set up the DAS Wall of Death, and had to try and position a Dearmer Destroyer at an oblique angle to the Troll Stroll. It was murder."

"Did you try the OB Slam? Or a SANE Sidewinder to counter?"

"No because two moves later he PONDERIZED me!" Smile

Welcome to Geek speak thudder style. - reminds me of that post I saw from Dewi. Why do I demonize my whosawhaztit? Where do the black dribbly candles go? What was that "whooshing" sound over my head?

What's wrong with *that*? Do I need to defend myself against it?

What if I tried to control that one troll's approach with:
3. d G15 - H15 ?

He's blocked out of J12, and L12, leaving K12 the only option for advance. But maybe that's where I *wanted* him to go? So assume he does...
T K11 - K12 x L13

and I say 'bugger this' and head off to another part of the board?
4. d P10 - G2

What happens next? Puzzled

to be quite frank and 'onest with thee i do see the poons offensive to be dead, there is now just too many counters for it (this however does not stop me from being splarterd everywhere by said tactic)

+1 last thing!

LOL!! Laughing it's a little program-imp that makes the thudbot listen for people wanting to connect to the game and restart if it crashes or shuts down for any reason. I think that's pretty much the gist of it.

We get a lot of traffic to the daemonize page as it's one of the tricky things to do in php, i.e. to daemonize a script so that it listens for people wanting to use it. You techies out there feel free to correct the inaccuracies of the previous. My job here is to make things look pretty and tell people "Hey! Come have a look at this!" more than to make them actually do work Wink

It's an old post, hope you still want an oppinion on the
Dm13 - H13 move.

It defends very well against the approaching troll at J10.

If the Troll continues his attack via K11, you should reinforce the '13-line' with:

3 Da7 - G13 T ??
(thanks to the dwarf on H13)

*3 ... T K11 - L12
Won't work, just ad another dwarf to the line.
*4 Df1 - f3

The troll player has the option to end youre first
block at the cost of one troll, if he wants to. T G9 -
G12.
You captured the first Troll Smile. (Don't know if it's a
fair deal. Don't have enough experienceRolling Eyes)

The Troll advances to J11, you sacrefice the H13 dwarf:

*3 D ... T J10 - J11
4 D E2 - E13
You need the threat of the H13 dwarf to J13 and K13.
With an optional dwarf on G13.
That's why the troll cannot advance to K12.

4 ... T J10 - H12 xH13 (our brave little
dwarf Neutral)

The Dwarf responds with an even stronger'13-line'

5 DF1 - F13
Defending G13,H13,K13.

The attack of the H12 Troll is repelled. Yay!!!

Conclusion:
Don't continue with the J10 Troll in turn 2 if you don't want to lose a single Troll, haha. You'll just have to make a sacrafice with a shove from G9 later, or attack the other site of the Block.

Any comment is welcome. I wrote this at night perhaps it doesn't make sense at all, please let me know if it does.

Hope this answers your question, if you haven't figured it out yourself ofcourse, its an old post. Wink

g'night
Floris

You can use the http://game.thudgame.com/getgame forum option to get the code for a layout that shows in the forum or cut n past and edit the bit below to the position you want to show which is of a recent game of mine and not using the poons.
