I had a Firefox upgrade for Mandriva (Linux) 2006. I'm not sure it had anything to do with this (alleged) vulnerability. Speaking of which, it isn't certain that the two "hackers" didn't kludge together slides of previous FF vulns and package them as something new to take the piss out of the conference. There's nothing on The Reg, Newforge or any of the other usual places on the net, so I'm not certain it exists. nevertheless, software should always be kept up-to-date.

Wa-hey! As predicted here on this site (see above), the sploit covered by news.com isn't so dire after all and is probably a variant of a much older known issue. Msicha Speigelmock and the Mozilla security team have a joint statement on The Reg here.

Nevertheless, stay safe and always keep patched and updated, regardless of whether "hackers" jump the gun on their PR releases.

Embarassed I bow to Lees greater FireFox experience i tend to check out dubious claims on various hoax busting sites but as this was on what i thought of as a reputable net news source that's been around the block a bit i assumed that they had checked it out having said that my only consolation is that el reg did also have it tho they picked up it was dodgy info quicker.

Please don't start calling me Peter as in Peter and the wolf as i am usually the one that picks up and points out hoax virus warnings etc but we all get caught out occasionally and as i had noticed that a lot of users here use FireFox and a few had had resources probs with it running the site i thought it worth posting this one. But as i have said b4 quoting Jasper Carrot "We all make mistakes as the Dalek said climbing off the dustbin." Wink

It was a joke. Can't you hear me laughing? Har di har har.
Sigh. Losers...

But thanks to Alex anyway, for pointing it out. It's not his fault, after all, is it? He just has a different sense of humour Wink. More like mine.

Don't anyone let SANEAlex fool you on this one! He's as computer savvy as anyone and I knew he'd checked it all out thoroughly beforehand. I think my triumphal post can be interpreted as "A Big Sigh of Relief" rather than "w3 r00l d00dz". If SANEAlex posted a security warning tomorrow I would lead the stampede to check it out. But, as OB said it was a joke by a couple of juveniles who surprisingly are still employed by their rather embarrassed employers. If this was humour they really need to get out more. Puzzled

There's a mostly good piece on The Register about the whole kerfluffle but I did have a gripe with the second page where they simply parroted Symantec saying Firefox had more flaws than IE over the past year thus it was less secure. What this misses is that IE has had 10 times as many in its lifetime, and, even after fixing all those, and with all the experience fixing things it still turns up almost as many as Firefox. Worse, it takes 9 times as long to fix them as well. That's scandalous! Evil or Very Mad

I am very happy to see that Thudgame.com folk use Firefox 53% of the time and when combined with other alt.browsers they all make up 62% of all visits! You're a tech-savvy lot so big yerselves up! Very Happy

FireFox and Java bug across

Hmm. Well, Glad the firefox bug wasn't too serious. I just wish I could play Thud with Camino or Firefox on the Mac.... I have to open Opera to play (the only time I do)--or Safari. I reported that one long ago, though.

And yes, SANEAlex always seemed pretty tech savvy to me, too.
