After browsing a few forums recently i have descovered a very common trend - which, alas, the thud forum does not follow.
what i am talking about is a "welcome" forum where everyone is welcomed, ground rules are set, and moderators/admins and such like are introduced.
just thought it might be worth investing in one of these.

I think this is an excellent idea. However, since this is an integrated website with lots of things here, not just a forum, the welcome page might be overlooked. I can make it sticky in the forums, or a static page but also have another medium by which everyone new is welcomed -- the welcome e-mail that everyone who's registered on this new site gets when they sign up.
At the moment it's quite sparse: "Here's yer password; login at this page." I would like to add a bit about localisation and language choices for the interface but what else should go in it?
