Rankings.

I know Oograh Boike maintains a ranking of named Thud players accumulating their scored points.

But of course, scoring a 1 point win against the likes of Oograh Boike is far more difficult than a 16 point win aginst myself a week ago, when I hardly knew the rules.

To encorporate such considerations the American Hungarian professoer Elo devised a ranking system whereni you don't simply score points for a win, but rather for how much better you won than expected, considering your opponent.
THe FIDE Chess rankings are based no a refinement of his system, and so are some other sports' rankings.

Now I was wondering, what are all your thoughts on our adopting such a ranking system? Geek

i would second this motion, but, yes that was a but, i think it would be very hard and complicated to do such things.

we shall have to poke the people at the top to discover. would our resident OB be able to improv something from his league table jobbies?

tune in next time to find out!

Oh, but I'm quite willing to do the research, and implement it. Geek

Hi y'all,

It's not that I ignored this thread that I did not answer, far from it. I contacted Mazur, and took some serious effort in finding information, not only from him but other (chess-)players as well.
I've given this some time to brew, and think over, and I'm sorry to say: no, I'm not enthousiastic about this.
First of all, the scorecard is a hobby, and to me (like I explained elsewhere) not even the most important part of the pages. Since it's a hobby, I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. Plus I think that if you know how to read the scorecard (all it comes down to really is points divided by number of games), you can find out yourself who's better at it than some. It's not about best, it never was (though people that did end up number one occasionaly send me a message that they made a screenshot Evil ).
Second, a thought that didn't occur to me, but Mazur pointed it out: the number of games are far too few to get a working Elo-system.

Having said that, I hope you don't mind (Mazur didn't) if we keep it as it is.

Happy Thudding!

I agree totally with Oograah Boike. Although it was I, who brough the ubject up, and initially liked the idea, OB brought up several aspects I had not thought about. And then I thought some more.
(Computer-)Technically it would seem easy, after all, it's just applying some formula to the scores. But in practice it gets complicated.

So complicated, in fact, that I will not bore you with the details, since some of them are hard for me to explain in simple terms.
And in the end we'd end up knowing little more than what OB's simple scorecard already tells us.

It would seem nice to have a system like that, but if we're try it now, we'd only be lying with statistics to eachother and to outsiders.

Thud! just has to grow a lot more for it to make sense.

Mazur.

I'd like to agree that OB's scorecard works just fine for now, based on the ancient judgement of 'If it ain't broke. . .'

But one thing I'd like to remind folks of is the excellent Hall of Fame that our lovely new site gives us. I've always thought that active posters are just as much the superstars of this game as the awesome players. So let's keep rooting for our Hall of Famers and Top Users by Points!
