I admit this is just a blatant plug, but I'm hoping to bring in a few more thoughts in a couple of days. For the time being though:

the officialest unofficial Thud site out there!
Check it out, it has lots of savegames to replay that will help you learn how to play Thud! If you're entirely new to the game, maybe you should try the "Interesting Games" section first, and move from there.
Or you could have a look at the scorecard, and study any games the highest rankers played, and see how they got to be this good.
The most ambitious could even try to study the Thud Tournament 2006 games.
