When one creates a forum, one is offered the following opportunity:
"Optionally specify an alternative URL by which this node can be accessed. For example, type "about" when writing an about page. Use a relative path and don't add a trailing slash or the URL alias won't work."
Could someone tell us what purpose this serves? Where would an "About" page appear? In the Forums? How would it be different from a plain old topic? And what sort of URL is envisioned as an alternative one? Something on one's own site? Why?
Sorry, unclear on the concept here. And I'm a little worried that this invitation will intimidate non-geeky Thudsters.

Good question, thank you!
Path alias allows you to give a name to the page you're creating such as "about" or "our_trip_to_Bernards_party" (not actually the name but you get what I mean
). The thing is, too many paths will cause the site to slow down to a crawl so we only want to use it for static pages (such as the ones in the top menu on the right hand side) or in blog posts. Therefore I might hide it for the moment.
Paths are good as they help with Google rankings. We'll be upgrading the server software soon and the performance problem will disappear* so everyone will be able to use paths if they want to.
*we're aware there is a patch for this but as the upgrade will happen soon we'd rather not replicate any more work than we have to.
