If anyone else is a sad geek and has nothing better to do whilst eating lunch than peruse the fantastically irreverent IT news site "The Register", you might have noticed the Discworld shout in today's letter page, albeit in the narration text by Lucy Sherriff.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/07/21/letters_2007/
About halfway down you see:
"We could hardly get through letters without mentioning the fun poor old PlusNet has been having. First data goes missing, the customers get a bit annoyed and then, the marketing boss goes librarian-poo on a forum..."

Re: Discworld gets "Registered"
And still they come! Lewis Page posted an article on Quantum entanglement on El Reg regarding communication between two entangled ytterbium atoms and comparing it to Terry Pratchett's idea of communication between Kingons and Queeons:
"In this case the entangled rare-earth atoms were about a metre apart* in linear ion traps, but Monroe said that once the entanglement was complete the fibre link could be dispensed with and the entanglement would persist even if one atom was "(carefully) taken to Jupiter".
This is not unlike Terry Pratchett's well-known proposal to use royalty for communication, on the basis that as soon as a king dies his his son is instantaneously the king. This could allow faster than light communication across interstellar distances, as it's well known that royalness can be measured by simple means involving peas and mattresses.
There's more and it gets funnier as it goes on and despite some comments from the more autistic side of the bell curve is a wonderfully humorous explanation of some rather esoterically exotic science! Have a read
It's worth reviewing the article on alternative forms of measurement from a coupla weeks ago so as not to have a blank look on your face near the end of the article where there are some particularly humorous asides. Extra points for finding other discworld references on El Reg !

well I can hardly say I'm surprised. I find that whenever two or more intellignet people converge on an event, Pratchet will invariably for the basis of the assumed lingua-franca
how do you type grey letters they're so cool?
