TT2006 - Round 1, heat 2: Dearmer vs Mr Scrub

Druid

Finally, here's what we've all been waiting for: TT2006!

This is a standard post to give you some thoughts before you start this game. Please read this carefully, there are some additional last moment rules and clarifications below:
1. this game is intended for the players named in the topic.
2. it doesn't matter which one of you two posts first.
3. if you're the first one to post, use it to post a move, just to be sure; if you'd like to play online give any details like probable times online etc. and hope your opponent will be able to play online as well; otherwise, he will post a response move.
4. REMEMBER: THE DEFAULT IS FORUM!. If your opponent would like to play forum, there's no way to it but to agree.
5. (if played on forum) this game needs to be double unlimited!
6. both of you need to play a couple of other games, with other opponents, simultaneously; if this is the first topic you found, check the forum for any other TT2006 topics with your name!
7. the game needs to be ended at monday july 24th, 23.59 BST. That's British Summer Time. The game and thread will be locked at that time. If the game has not ended yet, the scores of the game still stand. Should the topic still be open: all posts after that time will be disregarded.
8. if there should be any disagreement, or breaking of rules, please notify the referee (Oograh Boike) by email or PM. I can't monitor all games, so please notify ASAP if a referee is needed.
9. (if playing on the forum) make sure you have "email notification on posts" on; that way you will get an email every time there's been a post in this thread.

Things we forgot to mention in the rules, and/or things we'd like to clarify a bit further:
10. The scores of all of your games in each round will be added up to give your final score. If you make it to the next round you will start with a 0 score again.
11. A list of all players can be found on oograhboike.com , in a few hours from now.

The rest of this post is only for those who decide to play the game online:
12. Dewi is working hard on a new client, to be released before the start of TT2006, but be wary anyway: most second half savegames used to screw up. If you'd like to suspend a game, do so in the first half preferrably.
13. the one who challenges, gets a notification of game number. Remember that number! If you're the one who's been challenged, you won't see that number. Remember to ask your opponent for it! All this refers to database, use this number in any posts, emails to OB, and savegames (should you have them).
14. Yes, if you could save games in ThudBoard while you play, that would be so much easier for OB. It takes a bit of work to make savegames out of database, so any bit of help is much appreciated.

One last remark: there's eight of you who signed up. I made two heats of four players. Missus OB was kind enough to pull the names out of a hat.
Best two of both heats go on to the next round. Best two of that round will play the final; runners up will play semi-final.

Good luck, and Happy Thudding!

Hullo Dearmer

I'd prefer to play this game online, if that's OK with you - I can be on any evening, and most daytimes from 7pm (BST) this week, then from saturday 15th to thursday 20th it'll be very difficult (maybe possible on the wednesday 19th). Then I think I'll be around more or less any time from friday the 21st til monday the 24th (which is the end of our window). Tho of course the fact that we're in different continents (if this is correct) might make timing harder.

If not, I'd start the ball rolling with
d E14 - J14

Thanks, and good luck
Mr Scrub

Good luck to you too.

I can probably play live, but the best kinds of times for me will probably be evenings. It would work really good for me around 19.30-20.00 local (about 23.00-23.30 GMT) so if that's not the best kind of time for you, we can try something else. I've suggested these times to Dwarfs are Small, but I don't want to take advantage of a UK opponent by insisting we play at ungodly hours (I could suggest 22.00 or 23.00 local, when I'm still fairly alert, but with a 3.5 hour time difference, you might not enjoy it as much) but then you could ask me to get up at ungodly hours of the morning!

I'm not sure if this counts as fair play, but can we make a gentlemen's agreement re: live games? Unless and until we arrange an actual time to duke it out on the client, how if we continue to volley a few set-up moves via the forum? The gentlemen's agreement part would be that when we settle on a live time, we can faithfully reproduce the game to date that way. Let me know what you think with respect to times, and that arrangement. If you want to continue (for the time being) like that, I'd counter your move with:

T H9 - H10

d A6 - J14

Would those times you suggested (Circa 7:30pm your time so around 11pm my time) be a start time for you? It'd certainly be possible for me - I don't have much that I have to wake up for the next day - but to give me some chance of winning I'd like to try a little (even say 1/2 an hour) earlier if it could be done.

If that's not possible, would it be worth thinking about the weekend of the 22nd & 23rd (I assume that the reason you're not starting til 7ish your time is work?). As far as I know I can do any time on those days.
As I say, if neither of those are practical suggestions, I can do an 11 o'clock start.

As far as this game goes, I was initially treating it as simply a contingency plan, in case the live version turned out to be impractical: I'd thought we'd probably not get very far on this if we did arange an online game, so would just ignore any moves here. However, I'm quite happy to agree to play these out - in fact it does make sense not to waste the moves.

On that basis:
d J14 - P8
and
T H9 - H10

I agree about not wasting the moves... and I'd pretty much figured that the first three or four moves will be reasonably predictable anyway...

I can probably be available around 7pm local (10:30 for you) tonight, if you're available. Just drop me a line and we'll see if we can't set something up for then. If not, I'll reply with a move later this afternoon (once I've heard back from you.)

Blimey, sorry about the last-minute reply - I've been busy being beaten horribly by Dwarves are small in another live tournament game...
But as far as your proposal goes, that sounds fairly sensible - I guess I'm as prepared as I'll ever be after that altercation with DaS Wink
I shall go and hang around on thud chat looking shifty
