I don't get your sacrifice moves.

Well, some of those moves are on purpose
Generally, the idea is to distract you away from the block, or require you to move the troll further from the block. You always lose some dwarves, so you may as well lose them usefully.
Others of the "sacrifices" are...er...not on purpose.

But sacrificing dwarves to force me to go the other way is not really possible, at worst I can just ignore the dwarf and lumber away from it.

Right. Just so. and the short answer on this one is that I completely forgot what I was planning to do, and failed to carry it out. So that would be one (two) of those sacrifices...by accident
What you have to do is first protect squares around the troll, so that when you attack it, the only place it can go to capture is where you want it to. This was a shining example of how not to do that.
On with the show.

Sounds expensive in terms of moves.

What? Should I have prevented that capture and let you get a proto-block on the side???
But then I would not get this move against the top for free.
1: I believe I took the dwarf on b7 in move 7....

True.
And my move 9 was not b5-b7.

See it's much easier set up a sacrifice when it's the dwarf you want to get rid of.
