I know that loads of other people have probably said this but does anyone have any tips they could give me when playing the dwarf side. i have kinda got the hang of playing as the trolls (as in, i don't lose in the first minute) but i get absolutely trounced whenever i try to play as the dwarfs, so if you can help me at all i would be really grateful.
Thanks

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
Our sister site http://www.oograhboike.com/ has lots of example games that you could download and run thru but basically Dwarfs are stronger when in packs, a block of 9 cant be approached by a single Troll unthreatened but in game quite often you have to sacrifice a few dwarfs to be able to build a block.
Where are we going and why am i in this handbasket?...

... Um anybody got any marshmellows.?
Re: Playing as dwarfs...
thanks!!! do you know when i should get worried about the number of dwarfs i'm losing???
And completely unrelated, do you know how i can change my picture, because i changed it but its still showing as the blue man i think....???
sorry for asking so many questions

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
i'm not much of a player, but i'd say get worried if you can't seem to be able to build a block.
.
pictures only show up for druids/librarians/admins and paying users (thudguild members). "common folk" have the blue person
and don't worry about asking questions, we're happy to answer them as well as we can. and it's much better than no one saying anything

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
The trite answer to the Dwarfs thing is when you lose more than your opponent :twisted after all its a game of two half's and its basically true in my experience when 2 players of similar ability play each other they both tend to score higher when playing as Trolls than with Dwarfs tho there have i think been some rare exceptions who have favoured dwarf playing most find Trolls easiest to start with .
On the picture thing you are still showing as a blueman i had a quick look with my druid powers to see if it was a setting i could change but as it is its not obvious that i can i think your best bet is to use the contact us on the right to send a message to Lee and/or Dewi the owners of the site to see if they can help.
edit it seems Ratdeath has a better memory than me i am getting well past my sell by date
but it still might be worth using the contact as i dont think Lee and Dewi think of this a commercial site anymore but keep it going out of goodwill because they are fans themselves and might be willing to switch the members option on if asked nicely.

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
i wouldn't mind paying, is it £10 for one year? i think i may be getting a bit too obsessed with the discworld but never mind. Have you paid? If you have could you tell me whether you would recommend i pay, because if not i will contact them...
( and thank you for the help with the thud game)
thank you for putting up with all of this!

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
10 quid for a year, yes. i paid mine a while back, when the site was still buzzing and again the year after, but not since. lee and dewi seem to sort of have abandoned this site, just like a lot of the active users. it's a shame, but that's the way it is and it just didnt seem worth paying the 10 quid again.

Speaking as one who has gone thu the stages getting Discworld paperbacks then hardbacks then proofs then the manuscript of the book i became a character in and appearing in two TV discworld movies as an extra and going to many of the Discworld events you may have some way to go before you appear too obsessed to some of us around here
It might be worth sending a message on the contact us offering to pay a tenner if you enjoy the site and are willing to do so i cant remember the pay details as being a Druid i got mine for free helping out on the site by dropping spammers in the scorpion pit etc.

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
i think i might pay for 1 year anyway just to see, but maybe once i've been on this site a little longer...
)
it can't be worse than some of the things i've subscribed to (e.g about £15 a year for an animal magazine every 2 months that usually ended up in the trash without being read

I was just ribbing you on the obsession thing. Prof Sir pTerry and the Mob have been generous inviting fans to be extras in the past and it looks like they may be so again in the future with UU and GO being the next likely projects if you are interested in having a go keep an eye on http://www.pjsmprints.com/news/index.html as news of this type is usually posted there first.

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
that's really cool, thanks, i'll be sure to look out for anything that's going to happen!!
Sorry to bring this up again, but apart from having a picture, do you get anything extra on this site for paying??

Weeeellll, I paid my share once since you needed to be a member to take part in the Thud-Tournament. But since the last tournament OB tried to start off has kind of failed because there were no players
And I still don't know what they used my money for
But I don't mind because I met some great people and that is worth much more to me than the 10 Pounds
thanks!!! do you know when i should get worried about the number of dwarfs i'm losing???
Since there are 8 Trolls and 32 Dwarfs you should catch about one troll for every 4 dwarfs you sacrificed. But since it usuallyharder to catch the first troll, this is only a rule of thumbs and of course it only sets you equal...
But still, I normally consider it a great success when I can keep up the 4:1 rule while playing dwarfs.

Re: Playing as dwarfs...

Re: Playing as dwarfs...
I found it hard but I made a block of 8 in 2 rows of 4 and I had 1 figure supporting that block. This was strong and I killed 4 trolls before they were split up.
