THE WALL, THE WALL!
THERE'S A DUCK IN THE POND!
+++HENRY!+++
I haven't been here in a long...long long long time. It all sort of dissolved really, didn't it.
Anyway, my point with this blog is to ask, what have you been up to since you "left" thudgame?
I, personally, have been continuing the long, dreary plod through school, with my goals in life slightly changed (From Robotics to AI, from AI to general computer systems), currently trying to raise alot of money to travel to Mongolia once my Sixth year is over with. Friendships have formed and broken, I've found my first girlfriend, lost her, and through some mutual, no-big-deal agreement, she's now dating my (still) best friend. (Young love. Utterly pointless
).
What about you? Do any of you still pop onto the site to check for activity? This was once such a close community, then we just drifted apart.

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
Well, I'm totally new to the site and the game. I became interested after I read "Thud" (one of Pratchett's most introspective and philosophical works). I got a bug up my *** and decided to do a web search.
And here I am. I've noticed a real paucity of players/members.
I really want to get active with a thud player who is willing to teach me
But to answer your question, work, work, work.......As usual! LOL!

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
Wellwell, I check the forum all the time, but unfortuantely it does seem like most people evaporated. The break down of the chat was probably acceleration the process. And this is what remains. I guess Ratty is still around, checking all the posts in the background and tagging them (isn't it so, ratty?). Else it does seem like work took all the crazy people in, normalizing them and leaving them short of beeing crazy enough to pop up here again. I know how it is, since my work is pulling me in more than I thought. Working all day just leaves me enough time in the afternoons and weekends to keep up my social life. But I guess I should not complain. On the other hand there are sentimental moments where I think back to the great time I passed with the people from/on here and wish it would come back.

you caught me XD. i'm the insane caretaker shuffling through dusty corridors removing spider webs and polishing medals and mumbling to herself. and i'm guessing alex is doing some of that, too, because sometimes the occasional spammer has been removed by the time i get here.

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
Yep i am still here occasionally eviscerating spammers when i can find them my anger management therapist says the occasional lapse does not matter especially when its chlorinating the shallow end of the gene pool
in friendly competition with Ratty for the insane caretaker position. I did wonder if we would get an influx of new visitors after the Going Postal film as Thud was mentioned several times by the Patrician but as they used a square chessboard instead of a Thudboard i suspect that might have made people think Thud was just a fantasy analogy of chess.
Where are we going and why am i in this handbasket?...
...Oh! always try to look on the bright side...
... Um anybody got any marshmellows.?
Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
On the other hand we could start a new page explaining people why thud is different to chess and not really fair and square. When I think about it... telling all these people why thud would not work on a square board... A challenge it would definitely be.
BTW has anyone ever tried to play thud on a chess board? When you are in someones place and look for a game to play, there normally is a chessboard around. But I would so much prefer to play thud (or a thud-similarity) instead.

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
my brother and i have considered it once. but then we realized that even if you ignored the lack of corners, you still dont have enough squares. so we took a scrabble board instead, those have plenty of squares.

Very creative
But unfortunately the Scrabble-Letters do not distinguish between two colors
That would have been great.

well, it certainly doesnt make playing any easier when trolls, dwarfs, the thudstone and the border all look the same. but you know, we were bored... XD

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
Probably not any more, after you started thinking about the whol game... And then trying to remember which letter was the thudstone, which one the dwarfs, which one the trolls, and whether to use the Q as a queen or if this letter should not be used.

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
and blocks suddenly looked a lot bigger/smaller than they really were because you dont really know where the border stops and the dwarves start...

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
I used to study music and graduated from that (i am a graduated guitar teacher now). But making music wasnt everything i wanted to do, so i started a second bacehelor-course in sofware engineering :S (the phrase "and now for something completely different" comes to mind ). And that's what i am still doing atm
kinda lost track of Thud 2 (?) years back, don't know why actually. Reading the old posts here reminds me of a lot of good times i spent in the chat and on the forums.
I , allso, would like to build an AI for the thudgame; read that this has been attempted by others as well. The new thud application even has an AI i noticed, good job! (forgot your name).
When i have a month of spare time i might get such a project started myself
But anyway, i check back here every now and then and will continue to do so as long as i have an internetconnection

Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
Hi Y'all,
I'm trying to revive the forum. Have had thoughts about doing so lots of times, but well, the longer you stay away the more awkward it seems to feel.
But yesterday Palm just made that decision for me by reviving our Never Ending Battle. So I'm back, and so is he obviously.
It seems to me, correct me if I'm wrong, that the regulars still come here occasionally and read. See this thread for instance. Never mind, so did I.
But only reading is not enough, is it? To have something to read, there has to be posts!
I'll try to do my best, but a little help is appreciated. If anything, start some banter in Thudding Drum. Just post, right? Please?
Happy Thudding!

I am trying to revive the site too. I have advertised it on the terry pratchett forum and shall advertise on the other 3 TP forums I am on.
Re: Thudgame:The afteryears
I too am new to thud but some one person to play against who wont hit, bit or cut me of at the knees for being stupid would be realy good.
As for the present I am waiting for my pre ordered copy of snuff to come out.
Feel the howl, smell the scents.
