sp just complained to me that the navigation links didn't work for her. i looked into that and noticed that they do work, but only when you double click them. otherwise nothing happens. what's going on there? i'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be that way, is it?

Re: Navigation links need double click?
Ah, that is the trick. I was only glad, that I know most important links by heart and can fill it in in the brwser line.

From the small change to the bullet point when you click, it seems like each link is trying to produce a drop-down menu (in the way that the "Create Content" link does, and is supposed to).

i see what you mean. wouldn't have noticed it myself, but it seems that we have a case of reversed group pressure... instead of the create content link imitating the group of non-drop-down-menu links, we have a group imitating a single indivudual.... fascinating... *goes off mumbling*

Although I didn't get what you were talking about (since I never heard of anything like "creat content" stuff), I realized that while the bullets do show up in Firefox, they do not in IE. Therefore I can just adopt my own theorie and go on believing you were talking about that B-)

nope, sorry. what scrubby is trying to say is that there's a link in the navigation bar called create content. this link opens a drop down menu and therefor has a little arrow as bullet point rather than a point. now, when you click one of the other links, eg recent site posts, its bullet point will change into a little arrow pointing down. when you click it again it will turn into a little arrow pointing right. so the other links are trying to behave like the link with the drop down menu and instead of taking you to whereever they link to, they try to show/hide a drop down menu, only they don't have one.

Thanks to Ratty's explanations even I finally got what Scrubby was talking about. Having neither the bullets nor the arrow thingies on my screen I was cunfuzzled. But i noticed when I click "create content" I get nice little squares in the drop down menue!
But, alas, the smileys still don't work for me

Re: Navigation links need double click?
Yayyyy, feedback!! That's the spirit!
OK, amongst various site tweaks and the yearly servicing it gets (OK, monthly, really...), one of the things I enabled was a little javascripty thing that lets you go to a place after double-clicking it. I have to confess it threw me for a bit as the description was something completely different (supposed to be for admin-y stuff rather than navigation). I'm not sure it adds anything so if it's annoying everyone I'll turn it off.
On another note, I also added on the Websnapr javascripty thing ages ago that shows a preview of the page you would go to when you hover over a web-link on the site. This is starting to annoy me and I would like to turn it off but what do you all think. It's only eye-candy, after all, but if folk like it I'll leave it as it is.
Thanks for the discussion - it's very helpful for us

it's not only annoying, i think it's also "dangerous". if i was an innocent discworld fan googling thud and ending up on this site i would leave again very quickly and never come back if i found that i can't actually go anywhere because the links don't work. i mean, few people would actually get the idea to double click the link. so i guess it'd be better to switch it off.

well, i was never exactly fond of these things, so i'm definitely not gonna complain if you switch them off. i don't see why i'd want to see a preview of the linked site anyway (same with windows 7: why are they wasting there time programming something that gives me a life sized preview of a minimized window? if i'd want to see the window life sized i'll just open it).
Thanks for the discussion - it's very helpful for us

Well, why not do it only for external sites? The internals look exactly the same anyways.

I'd also prefer the double-click removed. as i'm not much of an experienced internet user myself, i was really puzzled when i couldn't use the single-click thingy any more and if ratty hadn't told me of the double click i'd probably still be out there .......click........click...........click.........*feeling stupid.....*blushes**
