Kudos

Founding PatronLibrarianDruidThudmeister

This is a strange sort of announcement - it's me announcing that I've just seen these buttons marked "Give Kudos", but I don't really know what they're all about... Hopefully as the thread takes shape, it'll turn into a real announcement from our site god overlords...

Re: Kudos

Druid

Hi MS,

Weeelll, I've "successfully given" you Kudos, that do not seem to appear under the Kudos section in your profile.... But you're welcome to them anyway Very Happy

Re: Kudos

yep, spotted them some 2 days ago (i think). i thought i'd just sit and wait for someone to announce what they are. seems my plan hasn't worked so far, which doesn't matter because i'd forgotten about them in the meantime and will have again by the time i get up tomorrow.....

Re: Kudos

i also spotted them about two days ago and when i clicked the "give kudos" thingy nothing happened then i looked at my profile there they were listed above the thudpoints but without further information.
so i thought i'd just wait for some kind of announcement from whoever invented them and now waits for us to give them away.....

Re: Kudos

and you can only give a person one kudo in a yet to be determined period of time. i gave ob a kudo yesterday and the button is gone. then i gave sp a kudo just now and the button is gone too....

Re: Kudos

I know that i can't give kudos to myself cos the button with the troll is not in my own posts only in those of other people, but if i click on other peolpe's kudo button, they don't seem to get kudos either.

but, as for guessing what they are for..... maybe we should be grateful that it doesn't work, for to me the troll somehow suggests that a kudo might be a whack on the head!?! Evil or Very Mad Wink

Re: Kudos

Bronze MemberLibrarian

i have to withdraw what i said before. the button doesn't disappear for the user, just for the kudo'd post. so i'll go back to my first assumption: it's a rating system for posts. a post gets a kudo if it's good or helpful. the problem there is that there's no way to see how many kudos a post got, so all you could see is if a user posts a lot of good/helpful posts. :-S
if it's a whack to the head i vote for enabling it for yourself. every now and then i would just love to whack myself over the head.... Razz

Re: Kudos

I can give a kudo for each individual post...
I've seen kudos on other sites but they're usually calculated with online time and post count etc. like a level system...
Maybe they'll replace the thudpoints entirely?

i wasn't aware that kudos is an actual word and not a product of the twisted minds of certain people Razz else i would have done this much earlier:

Wikipedia wrote:

Kudos (pronounced /ˈkjuːdɒs/, often /ˈkuːdoʊz/), from the Greek κῦδος (not to be confused with κύδος "taunt"), kydos, (literally "that which is heard of") means "fame" and "renown" resulting from an act or achievement. Extending "kudos" to another individual is often done as a praising remark. It entered English as British university slang in the early 1800s. In Standard British English, as in Greek, Kudos is a singular and not a plural noun, and is used exclusively as such in Britain. However, in common use in the US the noun is often plural: She received many kudos ['ku:doʊz] for her work.

The term is often attributed to recognition in the workplace with many Employee Recognition Programs developed solely to recognize the achievement of individuals.

seeing how dead the forum has been these last weeks it might just be a trick to get us talking though. Wink

Re: Kudos

Admin

Right Smile Yes Smile Many thanks to our Thudmeister/Druid for kindly announcing kudos. Cheers mate (no sarcasm there - I configured and enabled it then got caught up in something that took far longer than it should have and forgot to post on it :-/)

Anyway...

Kudos are a way of giving not just Thudpoints for posting a good topic or comment, but to do so in a way that says how they were earned (hence the separately tracked "Kudos" in user profiles). Or that's the thinking; it seemed to work fine when I tested it....

We've been considering some form of user reward based on content quality for some time. Kudos are one way; vote up/down is another. they aren't mutually exclusive but kudos is the less-controversial thus easier to introduce quickly with less work. We would like to know how folk feel about vote-up/down functionality as well as it's something we could do (essentially you can vote on each post, usually +1 for something you like, -1 for something you don't and posts are promoted to a more visible place with more +'s and are relegated down, or completely disappear once they reach a certain threshold of negative votes) so let's know what you think.

As long as this is a pseudo-announcement, here's a little update:

1. Live Thud is fixed (as is 64-bit Java so i can play again - whoo-hooo!!)
2. The SSL cert was re-ordered tonite and will be up soonest so user activity should start to grow again - we need you all to be kind welcomers as you've always been Smile
3. Our putative attempt to integrate Google Lively has ended as Google pulled the plug on it. Sorry. We were going to try and replace the Chat with a Lively room Sad
4. We're doing initial de-bugging on something that will be the first stage in implementing Cities and will give everyone something to spend their Thudpoints on Very Happy
5. #4 will tie in very nicely with what OB wants to do with ITT2009 - we'll be getting with him, then with the Druids about how to best do this so watch (another) space.
6. I've just finished a year in hell working the job from hell. That's finished so now I have time to play Thud, see my children whilst they're awake (and in the same country as me) and finally burn that CD for SP and Ratty Shocked

Anyway, thudgame.com is getting some luvvin' from the admins and we hope to dazzle you all with some coolness over the coming months.

Feel free to break any of this off and start new discussion topics.

TTFN and thanx again to Scrubby for the good work! Smile

Yay, cities. I vote for this strange city where they have the green stuff made of herb, which must see a medicine (beeing made of herbs) Wink

BTW is it only me that does see the sign of the red cross with the alt-text "click to give Kudos" in my own Posts?

In my own posts, I don't see the red X, but I do see the text ("Click to give kudos") rather than the image that I see in everyone else's posts.
