Happy Martin Luther King Day

If you don't live in the US, which clearly most of you don't, you're still welcome to share in our holiday spirit, which most people here will ignore completely and go skiing instead.

Today I ponder on the wider meaning of Thud, and the genius of its inventors. Every other board game which begins with equality on all sides leads us to imagine that anyone can win, we all have a chance, perhaps I will win this war, perhaps I can enforce my will, perhaps I can rebuild that nation to look the way I think it should... you see where I'm going here.

The frustration of definitely being on the losing side from the get-go, which each of us has whenever we play dwarves, can remind us of the futility of violence. War is always frustrating and futile from the point of view of at least one, if not both, of the parties. I think that's what Terry meant by it.

Every time I play dwarves I recollect that all species, whether carbon- or silicon-based, do better to play board games in the cellar of rock shops than to wage war.

Happy Martin Luther King Day.

Hmmm, perhaps. But never underestimate the wisdom that comes from unexpected places; such as the hapless Mr Pratchett quoting Nobby Nobbs?

Including you, eh Havelock? Wink

Now I know you and I have been a place or two, Havelock, but you have to admit that our good Witch-Queen does have a point. Wars that use religion as a proxy for difficult politics really would be much better solved over a Thud board. Razz

Sorry, Magrat dear; just back in town and big shot men really can be so tiresome at times, can't they! Very Happy
