Anyone read any Robert Carter

Founding PatronLibrarianDruidThudmeister

While I was working for a certain national book shop, I found out that really old books, ones they dont think they'll ever sell and they've got some level of refund for from the publishers, are supposed to be destroyed. This made me very sad indeed...

In a wholly unrelated note, I picked up a couple of books for free recently, which may not be any good but needed someone to look after them. They're by a man called Robert Carter, and the cover blurb suggests a sort of Arthurian fantasy. Does anyone have any experience of this chap - what should I expect?

Hi MS, long time no see.
I Wiki-ed Robert Carter and he must be a genius because he published his first novel two years before he was born! Laughing Laughing

Full wikipedia article:
Robert Carter (born 1990 in Bedford) is an English novelist. His works of fiction include four historical novels (Armada, 1988; Talwar, 1992; Courage, 1995, Barbarians 1998;) and a mythic history trilogy entitled The Language of Stones consisting of the books : The Language of Stones, The Giants Dance and the final book, Whitemantle. These latter books were first published 2004-2006.

Carter was educated in England, Australia and Texas, USA. As an undergraduate he studied astrophysics at Newcastle University, then went on to work for Core Lab an American oilfield services company in the USA, various locations in the Middle East, Zaire and Scotland. He also worked for the BBC in London before becoming a full-time novelist in 1986. He has also written for film and television and authored computer games software.

You've got to love Wikipedia... The blurb in the front of the book has him down as "born exactly 500 years after the first battle of the wars of the roses", which presumably means may 22 1955 (First battle of St Albans). So Wiki is only out by 35 years...

sounds better. that's a lot of books to write and publish before you're 18. but i guess if you can do it before you were born it shouldn't be a problem... Wink

The odd thing is, it's not even a straight typo - I was expecting the real date to be maybe 1960, since if you're using the number pad it would be pretty easy to get a second 9 instead of a 6. But you'd have to be trying pretty hard to type 1990 instead of 1955, whatever keyboard you use...

maybe we are looking at the wrong word there. Maybe the person wanted to write something like: he got well known in 1990 with his book of, and someone thought this was a dumb sentence to start with and edited that.

Re: Anyone read any Robert Carter

i guess you could say, the birth of the person is (in this case) 1955 and of the author the date when his first book is published. but that would still be 1988 and not 1990...

Maybe he wasn't an author till 1990, before that he was just some scribbling artist Wink
