Mobile Thudboard

easy. thudboard is a pretty simple application that doesn't put stuff in 10 different places on your pc. all you have to do is grab the folder, copy it to your stick and you've got it working on there. you can, of course, also install it to the stick, but if you've got thudboard installed already, copying it is so much easier

just checked, thudboard is almost 11mb big, so any stick would do. if you've got a digital camera and a card reader even that would work.

hmm, wouldn't it be fun to even play Thud on your camera...

Ratty succeeds in making me feel old again my first memory stick was only 8mb tho happily my last was a 4GB corsair GT and as a heads up not all memory sticks can be booted from apparently even if the pc /laptop BIOS is capable of booting from USB flash. I think most of the Corsairs are bootable but not sure about which other brands are a friend told me the other night that a cheap 8GB he just bought was not bootable. On another front if you want a system than can play online thud if your primary harddisk crashes get a copy of knoppix i have played the online game using one of the browsers that comes on the bootable CD/DVD and if you have a router/hub that does DHCP it will quite often setup your internet connection automatically. I have been looking at the idea of using SLAX to make a bootable USB virtual computer that has the thudboard app on it as well as a secured Firefox, openoffice, gimp, mp3/video player, etc but its still in my in tray wherever that is but if i do get around to it i will FTP an image upto the net somewhere and post a link here.

If a group of us gt together and made "applications" to be used on bebo and facebook, or "widgets" that work in a lot of places, we could spread the thud!!!
Or even an online/not online java thud client (just type in the moves and play thud with a mate on the same mobile!!!).
I would be willing to help here, though a mobile client would involve serious copyright.

@alex: 8mb? i doubt you'd still get that today. luckily we weren't talking about booting from the stick and every computer (except for my laptop (due to lack of usb)) should manage to open the files on a stick.

When I started playing, and before I found the ThudBoard app, I made a spreadsheet for keeping track of forum games. Fits on any stick, even multiple games.
Your post reminded me, and I had a look for old times sake. Hey, I was good back then! No seriously, it even keeps track of pieces left. With a bit of tweaking I could put in a score as well, I think.
If anyone is interested I might translate it (the bits of text are in dutch) and put it on my site in Open Document format. That's the generally accepted OS independent standard that MS doesn't support.

I Had forgotten i was working on that project (with some help from some of the thudders who were at one of the wincanton events) and had made some progress it was at early beta testing i am re setting up my dropbox account and will post a link when it is ready. Basically i have adapted a version of the knoppix bootable cd into a version that has thudboard already installed and is bootable from a flash usb so if you can find a computer that can be booted from usb then there is a version of what you want. OB did make some good suggestions on improvements but i have not got a round to them and as i am spending whats left of my deck of marbles working on the PotentVoyager project i think i will post what i have as it is and as its open source you can improve upon what i have done as you see fit.

Just unzip the file to a 2GB or more USB flash drive on some systems i think that is all but on others you may need to run the makeboot program on it.

boot from the usb and when it asks select the saved version if you don't want to boot into a fairly clean version of knoppix.

Speaking about all these infinite possibilities of mobile Thud! playing, the next logical step would be for someone to develop a Thudboard app for the iPhone

Wouldn't that be a great opportunity to open the wonderful world of Thud! to a whole new group of users?

sorry, i spent many traumatic hours with macs and more are to come. but a windows mobile app would be nice. even though i dont really play thud anymore XD.

it's not like i dont play thud any more as a rule. so we can still play next time we're in a restaurant XD. imagine if we had a thudboard app on our phones. we wouldnt even have to take the board with us to the restaurant

Hm... and what about cross-platform compatible thud for tablet pcs with touchscreen? Each good restaurant should have one of those inside their tabletops: just flip a switch and the digital thudboard appears... with holographic dwarfs and trolls as extra option ;-D
