Hey ho. some days ago, during an extremely boring afternoon, i started pondering Thud, and after some time a hypothetical question occured to me: if theres was a ninth troll intead of the rock, and 4 more dwarfs in the empty places around the rim of the board, who do you think would have been better off?

Re: hypothetical question
The Trolls as the reason the rock was put there was to prevent them havering to much of an advantage.
Where are we going and why am i in this handbasket?...
...Oh! always try to look on the bright side...
... Um anybody got any marshmellows.?
Re: hypothetical question
You're absolute right SA.
I think that the Dwarves wouldn't be able to build a block. Not even get 3 or 4 Dwarves together.

Re: hypothetical question
I agree. My experience is that I was glad the rock was there when I builded dwarf blocks; and it annoyed me when trying to break blocks by shoving trolls.
I think there would be not much of a difference with a ninth troll and another 4 dwarfs filling the gaps. But the major problem would be the removal of the rock.
But on the other hand, this game only could be balanced by playing two rounds. The balance would be much more on troll's side, but overall, two equally talented players should feel no difference playing this 9 vs 36 game. Except for scoring points, of course. At least I think. Anyone like to try?

Re: hypothetical question
well has anyone thought of a low king and diamond troll figures?
That ain't no English I ever dun heard!
Re: hypothetical question
i have. very unfair, dwarfwise. if by adding a regular ninth troll the trolls have a huge advantage (note the diagonal pushing lines), adding one with extra powers (which is what you meant, i imagine) will totally destroy the dwarfs. unless, i guess, if your low king can push himself long-range or something.

Re: hypothetical question
well the book said trolls walk slow coz dey walk 'round talkin' like dis while the diamond troll is highly intelligent so he should be able to move infinite amounts but mebe we can make a rule that he may not partake in pushing. Mebe the dwarves can have 4 leaders as they are 4 tribes maybe and the king moves slowly (on a litter or palaquin mebe) so essencially acts like a troll or something i dunno...work on it
and killing the leader brings a bonus to the enemy and/or a handicap to the defender based on crushed morale

Re: hypothetical question
all this is good and well...but why complicate a easy, simple game that is easy to pick up in a few minutes? i think a few people would be turned away from playing if there are so many different rules all over the place.

Re: hypothetical question
well, it could be a new version of the game. you know, like koom valley thud. you can play it if you want or you can stick to the traditional version.
