The Colour of Magic

I twas a-browsin imdb on the night before Hogswatch, and much to my amazement stumbled upon the imdb page for The Colour of Magic tv thing and discovered what to me was some shocking casting developements (although I may just be being slow).

Sean Astin as Twoflower = BRILLIANT! Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

David Bradley as Cohen = Mr. Green Mr. Green

Terry Pratchett as Astrozoologist 2 = Cool Mr. Green pTerry

Christopher Lee as Death's Voice = Brill Mr. Green

But David Jason as Rincewind! - Surely not! Jawdropping! Isn't Rincewind supposed to be younger? So he can run faster? And not already Albert? I am much perplexed.

Yeah, I agree. Apparently he's this huge, mega Discworld fan and insisted, but it's shame coz there'll be more opportunities to play Albert in the future and he does it so well Smile

Merry Christmas and Happy Hogswatch everyone! Very Happy

Re: The Colour of Magic

I just saw hogfather last night(s) (it was a special thing cos of christmas but they cut it over two days) and I initially opposed many castings but found that they did do well to capture the essence of the characters. albert I found to be good as albert, like very good but I couldn;t see him as ricewind

Ponder looked like he was ready to do a HP parody

Yes they met in the book Mort, but i guess they are of a simmiler nature Albert has been running from death for centurys, i guess thats what rincewind has to look forward to. and they can do alot with make up

Its not my fault i can't spell, i was borned befor spellling wased invented

Re: The Colour of Magic

i think the realy important thing to remember here is that you should keep an open mind, as said prev' alot can be done with make-up and the people who are in control of the casting are not idiots, they probs know its a bit risky but if they werent completely sure it would then they wouldnt cast him, no matter how much he begged

and yeh for me hogswatch was just as good as the book, granted it wasnt the same and had a few differences but i had an opne mind and noticed altho it is not identical as it had to be changed for tv it was still jst as good an im sure this wll be too

Well, what do you expect? A book is always better than the movie. We are lucky to have read first and seen later. The Lord of the Rings thing was quite a good movie, but seen by those who read all of Tolkien's books, it was most annoying, 'cause the most important things were left out.
You can't get everything right in movies. I learned to be content, if most of the important storyline can be seen.
I want to quote an author at this time. I think it was Markus Heitz (German Fantasy author) but I don't know exactly. He said that he either would like to direct movies made of his books personally or not at all. Just because he could either work everything like he intended it or could afterwards say 'I didn't mean it that way at all'.

Just to say something of my own: Visualising books is destroying minds. I cannot read "Hogswatch" ever again without having pictures of the movie in my mind. And seen this way, isn't PTerry telling us "your mind is what you're in charge off"? Or am I mistaken? Fantasy is what your mind does. Not what anyone tells you to think.
Discworld in a movie with wrong actors, as you discuss just now, might as well shrink to "Mitternachtsspitzen". I will ponder the next days to translate that for non-Germans. I'm sorry for that.

i agree with elarias. and beyond the books-better-than-movies issue, i mostly find it much better to read the book before seeing the movie. the only exception i can think of to this is the "golden compass" movie. i was really disappointed when i saw it (the actors were pretty good, and actually exactly like i imagined the characters, but the writers simply butchered the story), but a friend of mine, who saw the movie before reading the book, said it helped him understand some concepts of the story much better.

Re: The Colour of Magic

Yeah it takes an amazing film to stand on its own, although I happen to think that with the Lord of the Rings films, although they perhaps aren't as amazing as the book, do extremely well on their own (although it may help to have read the Hobbit at least beforehand) and there even though the characters don't look like how I imagined them, when I read the books again I still have my original imagined characters in my head, so it holds out. Same with the Hogfather, the book's good enough that I don't picture the TV character's unless I want to. The Bourne Identity and Supremacy are based on books, and although I haven't read them the films definitely work on their own. Of course for practically everything else the books are better (Harry Potter and Alex Rider immediately spring to mind as kid's books/films) which methinks tis a pity because I love cinema.

Mind you I don't know how many of you have played the discworld playstation games but whoever did the voices and music for those it worked brilliantly. I reckon they could hit the spot exactly if they get the music and casting right.

playstation? i thought they were only for PC. and yeah, Eric Idle as Rincewind could be awesome, but he too is a bit on the senior side now. *sigh*

Sky has done a website to go with the COM movie it is heavy on flash and other code so don't bother if you are on dialup unless you have a lot of patience.
