Some Site changes

Admin

We've made a couple of slight changes to the site Thudpoints software. Firstly we've added a lot of capability to it. Mostly it's behind the scenes and most won't be used initially but one thing you'll notice is the "Give Thudpoints" link on the left hand menu when you're logged in. Given that it's the Hogswatch season, and Christmas is just around the corner, one might think a "Giving" button on the site might just be a really good idea. Up to you all, everyone, use it, don't use it - it's your choice Smile

The other minor change is that comments don't earn Thudpoints. there seems to be a bit of an arms race of collecting Thudpoints and this is affecting the quality of the content on the site so we're going to watch to see if this has the desired effect.

As always, let us know what you think below Smile

Re: Some Site changes

To add to the above, the site search capabilities have been upgraded to allow stem searching (searching for "upgrade" should also find "upgrading" and "upgraded") and supporter modules have been added to allow this to be done, not only in English, but in Dutch and German as well.

To do this, though, the search index had to be completely rebuilt and this will take a few cron runs to complete to keep the site usable so it should be giving good results soon.

Oh, and if anyone was thinking, "well i just post loads of topics then", they will be swiftly deleted if full of nonsense and could be put elsewhere as a comment.

Re: Some Site changes

Druid

i like the idea about thudpoints, one question or two..

1: do you get points for creating forum topics?
A: if you do i think it should be reduced to
1 point for the Drum and everything else that isnt in this list
2 points for the creative forum
3 points for the Forum thud topic

Question 2

Do we get points for posting comments in the Forum thud topic?

I havn't looked in great detail yet at the points but what i know about it i like.

Re: Some Site changes

ok i just tried the Give Thudpoints, i tried to give some to ratty, did it work ratty?! Very Happy

also i think it would be nice if there was a comment box that you could right a little comment in to say why you are giving them points, however i think that druids should be able to see what people are writing or something along them lines

i also dont have any points so i can't give anything, but just a quick question which prob has a very obvious answer but by giving points is that giving some of your points? or just giving them points?

is any of this making sence?

lol
that's exactly what i was wondering. because to me it sounded like "give them points" and not "give them some of your points"

What's the point in giving points, when those points aren't yours to give? Does that answer your questions?

I like this idea of remodeling the points system, so I'm all with you. But I agree with Angua (again... Wink ) that the Forum Thud section should be an exception. I would like to go even further than what she proposes, or rather change it somewhat since I do not know yet what the future will bring.
All I know is that there have been plans for a while now, to implement points in the live game client. Once that is implemented, I think the same should go for the Forum Thud section. If the game client awards points for games started / finished / won / lost, the same points should be awarded for Forum Thud games.
If that's a bit hard to implement, I would be happy to act as an intermediary. Since all games come to me eventually for my site --and if there's a possible reward even more so, I guess-- I would be happy to give word to the Site Gods that so-and-so should get an x amount of points for playing Forum Thud.

Happy Thudding!

where have all the thudpoints gone and was this planned?

i agree with OB to reward playing thud and finishing a game should be rewarded too.

Re: Some Site changes

well, now that I've replaced several miles of jaw and tongue back into their original place, I realise I didn't need them in order to type. Nonetheless, are there to be checks and balances established so that people not on the pay role can have anywhere near as many points as the admins/druids/librarians and hence be able to enjoy the aspects of the site that seem to be getting the most attention and upgrades, or does one need to be an anointed one in order to use the features newly restriced to normal users (approximately 99% or the registered roster)?

I have some 4-5 thousand points, librarians get 150/mnth (unless that increases) so it will take some time (4yrs) but eventually they will reach me and surpass me even if they start from 0. people like me have no viable "income" if you will, unless I round up every idiot on the streets of Canberra and get them to join en-masse (It's not that it's below me I'm just too damn lazy) or start entering competitions left right and center and winning the majority of them, then I will stagnate meaning my points valuse will eventually drop to worthless as others rake up points.

No doubt this is cause for celebration in everything within 90 degrees of Greenwitch so I won't stress my situation, the point (pardon the pun) is that there are some 2000+ users in a similarly stagnating, albeit somehat smaller boat who will be less than pleased to see the chosen of the gods sail past them...on motorised boats no less. Not all of them are active users to be sure, but their number is rising and while it is true that some of us have, arguably ourselves to blame for never earning promotion, promoting everyone active to administrative ranks for the purposes of equalising the playing feild is nonsensical.

[exhales] that feels better

Everything's got an end. A sausage has even got two.

Sausages! Hot sausages! Inna bun! Meat pies! Get them while they're hot!
... Hole food! Hole food! Rat! Rat! Rat-onna-stick! Rat-in-a-bun! Get them while they're dead!

Re: Some Site changes

its not that I'm bitter, I just think it mkes no sense to elevate the admin above all the other users through a technicallity

Re: Some Site changes

Bronze MemberLibrarian

a) the whole point of this is that points don't matter anymore. i don't know why we still get them. why anybody still gets them for anything, actually.
b) all the points have been set to zero shortly before you stopped getting points for comments. so i wouldn't bet on having several thousand if i was you.

Re: Some Site changes

Druid

I think i can see where Sgt L is coming from, that why does librarians and druids still get a lot of points a month? if this is what you are getting at i prob would have to agree, i personally wouldn't mind if i didnt get any points for being a druid, i am a druid to help the site i wouldn't mind if i didnt get points.

Also i think that know points have a meaning now, that you get them for playing thud i think that they are a good idea, however i think that they should be able to be used in some sort of way, for example you can get to post a blog for 10 points or something along them lines.

Just some thoughts.

Re: Some Site changes

ratty perhaps you didn;t notice the commercialisation osf the site, the idea of points as dewi have stated often was designed to be a form of currency. to buy all sorts of things and to be able to do things with, however if noone else can get any then what's the point in joining?

if i remember rightly the idea of using them as a currency has already been discarded again quite some time ago.
