The original gaming pieces(the light grey ones) will go darker with a lot of handling and my boxed set gaming pieces started out a lighter grey but have had a certain amount of wear and tear that has caused them to have a darker colour. My understanding is that they are both made with aluminium oxide embedded in resin but the method of production for the boxed set caused the trolls and dwarfs to be slightly smaller.
