Re: Greek Words
I used to live there as a kid, but I have forgotten almost all of it. Here are a few though... Using gh for gamma (gargle sound), dh for delta (hard th like "this"), th for theta (soft th like "thin"), ch for chi (ch like in "loch")
Ghaidharos - donkey
Mitera - Mother
Adhelfi - Sister
Adhelfis - Brother
Aghapi - Love
Tiropita - Cheese pastie
Nichteridha - Bat
Nichteridhwpita - Bat pie
Fotia - fire
Colo - backside
Colofotia - firefly (literally "fire-butt"!)
Moreh - Fool, moron.
Yasou - Hello/goodbye (Yia sou = luck your)
Yasas - Hello/goodbye to more than one person (yia sass = luck all-of-yours)
Kali - good
Kali Mera - good morning
Kali Spera - good afternoon/evening
Kali Nichta - good night
Oreio - Good wonderful.
Poli - very
ine - it is
soo/moo/too/tis - of yours/mine/its/his
o/i - the (male/female)
Edit: and the important ones that will get you smiles and good treatment (everyone likes a tourist who makes an effort to be polite in the local language, like saying "alstublieft" in Holland):
Evkaristo - Thanks
Evkaristo para poli - Thanks very much
Sighnomi - Sorry
Se parakalo - Please
Those are the only clean ones I can think off offhand. I do not know why these ones leapt to mind
Edit2: You can combine these words into a sentence with a few "glue" words, though I am very mad at the whole genders thing, so I am likely to get the grammar horribly wrong...
O Ghaidharos sou ine? Poli oreo ine. O kolo tou ine sa i mitera sou.
The donkey of-yours it-is? Very wonderful it-is. The butt of-its it-is like the mother of-yours.
This your donkey? It's very nice. Its butt looks like your mother.
Yet another geek.
