I thought of a dwarf defensive move, and i was wondering if someone might want to help me improve it. i tried it against florisxiv in a live thud game, and it seemed to work pretty decently. this is not exactely how it went, but as close as i could recreate it:
its about mid-end battle, theres a dwarf block forming on J15, K15, K14, L14, L13, M13. a troll from, say, O10 moves to N10, planning to move down the diagonal line to L12 and take the dwarfs two at a time. a dwarf moves to O9. the troll moves to M11 (moving anywhere else will end up by the dwarfs capturing the troll or making the block stronger), and then a dwarf moves to N10 (not the one from O9). now, if the troll moves to any square other than L10 and M10 he'll be captured. he retreats to one of the above squares, and now the dwarfs have a bit more time to make the block stronger.
is it any good?

i have used this tactic a couple of times, but usually i am too short sighted to use it.
i can only see what you are doing working if there was a dwarf on P8 as well ( although i may have mis-read your instructions) nice tactic

Re: The Bill Door Back Stab
thanks.
you dont need a dwarf on P8 cos you already got two in a line - O9-N10. you need P8 only if the troll goes to O9 instead of N10, and then your line can be P8-O9 or P8-O9-N10.

Re: The Bill Door Back Stab
It does broadly work, yeah (assuming the one you said was on M15 is actually on M13 - there is no M15 after all
). But of course it depends largely on how many trolls there are, and where - I myself would be very wary of using a troll from 010 to attack a block at the bottom if I could avoid it. I'd probably rather use ones from the middle, even if it cost me a troll, because of the advantage of leaving trolls in all the corners.

Re: The Bill Door Back Stab
its a good point, but thats why i said its a mid-end battle move - by that point in the game, other trolls may be captured or in a far side of the board, and by the time the trolls left in the centre manage to form a line, the dwarfs will probably be ready for the attack.

Re: The Bill Door Backstab
I just saw this post hanging around uncommented. I don't know if that has been already discussed, so I just write down my thoughts on this.
I think that diverting that troll in such a situation will only delay the loss of the block. If after your sequence the next Troll move is
T M11 - M10 x N10, capturing a dwarf, an effective defence would be dwarf to P8, since this blocks M11 again. However, those two dwarfs will be lost. Again, you have gained time, if the Troll moves that way.
On the other hand, the Troll player could just move to N9, capturing the dwarf at O9.
I think it depends much on the general situation on the board if you use the time gained for rescuing your block or building it stronger. To me, it looks like you will lose two or more dwarfs in that block until you can take out that single troll.
Do you have a record of that situation when it occurred in the game? That would be helpful.

Re: The Bill Door Backstab
i first thought of it during a live game against florisxiv, but it was a long time ago and i have no idea what the game number was. thanks for the ressurection and the comments, i almost forgot about this topic

Re: The Bill Door Backstab
That's a shame. This situation looks like it could occur in a lot of games. I will check my own game records to see if I find something like that.
And I have to correct my first post to this topic. It was not unanswered. I should have scrolled down some more.
