Annoying live chat problem

Librarian

During the last week or so, an annoying problem keeps happening to me: every now and then i stop getting things other people say. they cant see what i say, but for some reason i cant see what they are saying. this can happen all of a sudden in the middle of the conversation, or from the moment i enter the chat. of course, its possible you all stop saying anything to make me go away, but thats a different kind of problem Razz. Help me!

Dewi has a fix he's rolling out that should solve this problem. Post a gain if it doesn't and the problem stays.

Re: Annoying live chat problem

We've not noticed or been informed anyone has had problems logging in. Indeed I;ve seen you logged in most days for the past week so I'm not sure what we can do differently. Mind you Dewi did fix a password bug in which people could "halfway" login and spoof being someone else by simply typing the correct number of spaces in the password field. Can't do that now if this was what was being used - the correct password has to be used now.

As far as launching the applet, again, you've been on the applet quite often so I;m not sure why there's a complaint. But, upgrading to the newest version of Java is always a good thing to do as a troubleshooting measure. We can control almost everything except for bugs in Java.

OK, then we need to know the usual: which browser, Java version, OS do you use?

Node 990 is the dev client and used only for beta testing. It's expected to have problems so won't be a solution to something not working in the live client.

I use suse linux 10.0 and Opera maybe 9.0, dunno my java

also, i've not often had this problem before. sometimes yes but 990 helped, now i dunno what's wrong

As far as I know SuSE 10.0 is deprecated and out of support. There's a window scaling issue with Konqueror and KHTML (so maybe for Safari as well) but that only affects vertical scrolling only. The server works on standard IRC with php so there's nothing magic there. It seems Java may be the culprit but SuSE 10.0 may not support newer Javas without a library update (which may or may not be possible). I would recommend skipping a generation and going straight to SuSE 10.2 as 10.1 had problems.

OK, we've done more testing and there is a problem with Opera and the java client. No idea what it is yet. We're sniffing for Opera whenever the client is loaded but an Opera only Javascript file isn't working (or the problem). It's cross-OS as there are problems with Opera on Windows as well. Mind, I've tested only with latest opera and latest java (6) so it may be fine on earlier releases but that would be an interesting anomaly.

Opera seems to want to make you explicitly allow Java but Javascript/ECMAScript is allowed by default. Wtf??? Having enabled Java I don't see any difference. On Linux Opera allows you to specify the exact location of the executable but, although it's been shown the true path and acknowledges that it seems to be the one (literally said that!) it still doesn't load Java when loading node/561.

On the good news side Konqueror/KHTML (Safari and friends) are now fixed and working nicely.

well, on my linux opera it works alright, at least most of the time. can't say about windows opera, because ever since that crash from a couple of weeks ago it doesn't recognize java anymore and i'm too lazy to re-install. as for konqueror, it won't display the applet with me, but i think that's a problem with java and not the client, but as i'm not using konqueror i can't be bothered to find the problem.

Re: Annoying live chat problem

I cannot log in on my upstairs PC
the downstairs one is fine, they are (AFAIK) both running the same version of Frefox.
I may have to try intert exploder, but the live chat thing just keeps giving me out of cheese errors.

I think it is prob the extra milliseconds it takes to go thru your wireless router the site seems to have out of cheese errors if the ping time takes too long.
