[SgtL] jack and the magic pointstalk

No, they're all still there. Have no fear Smile

In any worst case scenario we have nightly backups giving a site snapshot back to the great upgrade of August 2006.

The "My thudpoints" thing was meant to be a record of transactional thudpoints actions - when we add thudpoints for an activity (eg. Druids salaries), when you get thudpoints for referrals as discussed here, when you get thudpoints for an e-commerce transaction, etc. It wouldn't have been an issue if the site were new and no one had gotten any points yet.

Because it was confusing we've turned it off but the actions still trigger when the salient activity happens. And everyone has all their thudpoints they had before.

The only thing the Clacks's have to do with it is that you get 10 Thudpoints for sending a clacks but only folks who had sent a clacks would have known this, we didn't publish it. Hmmm, did someone say 10% discount... Very Happy

come again? I was under the impression that sending a clacks essencially /cost/ points not earned them. this appears somewhat counterintuitive. I think someone shifted the wrong paradigm there lee.

I think to clarify a clacks will cost £1.00 or 100 Thudpoints if you send a clacks you get 10 thud points so you are rewarded if spend actual hard currency (and currently the £ is very hard against the dollar these days is the American economy collapsing ?) or if you use Thudpoints you in effect get a 10% discount by spending 100 and getting 10 back. This is my understanding of the posts so far.

Yep, that's the one! If you send a clacks (using money or Thudpoints, either way) you get 10 Thudpoints credited to your account. So, OK, it's kind of a rebate or a discount however you look at it Smile

Re: [SgtL] jack and the magic pointstalk

do americans wake up thinking in terms of buisness or am i just too abstracted from the world to understand the logic here. surely if u said "it costs 90 point but if u use cash u get 10" this would be logical AND make ppl think that givig the site money which i understand is the whole point would be very valuable indeed.

P.S. the US econi\omy is prob about as bad as the Oz one

Possibly, except for two things: 1) getting people to part with money on Internet sites is as tricky as anything and getting it out of youngish, technophiles, as this site is over-endowed with, is yet trickier. 2) Coding that in would mean re-writing vast swathes of code costing time and effort for little return thus we've used what we have and presented it as we have - it costs 100 points for a Clacks but once you send it you're credited with 10 points back: i.e. we want people to send Clacks's hoping they'll find it cool, and easy to do, and thus want to do more of it even spending a bit of money along the line at some point.

What we reckoned on was that offering folks here a chance to do an actual Discworld thing, from one of the books, would be extremely popular. At the moment it's on soft-launch only to this site, but after the Jamboree it will be on full promotion to the rest of the Discworld fraternity throughout the Roundworld.

Re: [SgtL] jack and the magic pointstalk

much as i instinctively dislike the ocncept, what you could do, is set up a function where ppl give their credit card number and in return a vast plethora of cool options becomes availibl,e using them will cost money but if ppl find it as easy as pushing a button, the will be more temped to part with their money and this way they need to sign up to these options once and from then on they are automatically debited to their account. easier that way

u mean other DW sites will adopt the idea?
