One of the best strategies would be to let him, and try to form a block elsewhere. Do not be afraid to lose a few dwarfs in the first couple of moves, if this can benefit you later on. Have a look at the first page of "Aine vs Oograh Boike (take 5)" in "Forum Thud!" to see what I mean.

Oiy... I liked my opening moves....

Na I know what he means...
It is easier to form a block when the there are less trolls in the middle

It is some times useful to note that if you are in the process of forming a block and the trolls form a shoving line just out side your reach. It is some times possible to place a dwarf so that your line is inline with their line. (following so far?) If your line is long enough to (intheory) reach their second troll, then you are guarinteed to capture a troll.

to explain this. if the troll attacks your line, you will capture that troll. If the first troll steps aside (runs) you would capture the second troll.

I am also quite happy to sarcrafice a dwarf or two if it means I can capture a Troll - heartless I know.

If you have time, look at the start of some of the previous game (they are on the other forum while this was being set up) thud section of the Cunning artifactors site or ask someone here to play you a 'tutorial' type forum game, letting you expleore the different possibilities. or just challange someone else.

sometimes u can form a distraction body of dwarfs and create what looks like it will be a strong group using just 3. and sneakily move a couple of dwarfs into a different group. it's hard to make work but i've managed it a couple of times.

You can also move a dwarf beside his line of trolls (one move). He then either has to ignore that dwarf (losing at least one troll) or has to move one of the trolls out of the line in order to take it.

You then have one move before he can regroup his line of four.

And sometimes, one move is all it takes...

[disclaimer: so far as I can remember, I have played exactly one serious game of thud, through to completion. But I've played a few dozen quarter-games for testing porpoises...]

dwarf captures

In the rules, it says that dwarves must make a shove line to capture trolls. correct?

However, in a few of the posts above, they state that if a dwarf moves next to 2 trolls and one troll does not take it but moves elsewhere, the dwarf can take the other troll.

that doesn't sound right to me, otherwise dwarves would just charge in.

The line of Dwarfs must be long enough to reach the Troll... if it is a line of 1 Dwarf, it can reach a Troll in an adjacent square.
Oh, and Dwarfs are thrown, not shoved... and a single Dwarfs can apparently throw himself Wink

That would only be useful if they can build a block elsewhere, otherwise the Trolls would just keep capturing Dwarfs as they have nowhere interesting to turn to...

Ciao, Mc!

Thud Game Strategies

1 dwarf does not a line make! a dwarf on his own is just an individual. if u stand at the bus stop on your own you're not a line of 1 you're a person waiting alone. if it was the case that a line =1 then trolls on their own could shove themselves too! Wink

I supose yes a one troll could shove himself one square a make a capture... but that is no different from its usual move...

In traditional thud, one dwarf can capture a troll provided it is in the adjecent square.

it is in the rules somewhere...

Fair enough. i don't think i read the rules properly, dont own a copy yet and only played once so far! Sorry for being a dimwit Embarassed

I'll try and post the wording... can't remember it and the rules are at home somewhere...

I vaugly remember that is is a page or two on from the general capture section...

I have to admit to thinking they couldn't when I started too...

I've been meant to put a copy of the rules on the site. I'll be sure to make it tomorrow's job. Embarassed

We've been up to our eyeballs in things (logged in Thud coming VERY soon now!!) but will re-double our efforts Smile

There's absolutely no need for that! You've done a great job as is, and it's about time someone would acknowledge that. Let me be the first Rolling Eyes .

Blushing very deeply now! Embarassed Embarassed but thank you and thank you from Dewi (who's been fighting with the data centre for the past 6 hours or so...Online Thud will be up momentarily and D can get some sleep |-) )!

So much to do but maybe, at least, I can finally get to grips with Koom Valley Thud this weekend. I wish you (OB) and the Dutch contingent could be there Crying or Very sad
Someday....

Right, now, cuppa coffee, delete a bit of comment spam then gonna get those rules up! Smile

Rules are up. It's not complete and needs work still but have a look at: http://game.thudguild.com/rules.html

I'll pretty it up tomorrow Smile

off to bed....

UPDATE: Rules for Classic Thud are up at the above address (KVT will also be up as soon as I get a chance). It's been quickly tested and seems to work quite nicely on proper browsers (FF-Win/nix, Opera-Win/nix, Galeon/nix Epiphany/nix, etc.). It works OK in IE6, and acceptably in IE5.5 and 5. It mostly works in IE4 but, in the immortal words of the Millwall FC stanza, "We don't care!" Wink

Hmmm, IE.... there will be a particularly hot part of hell reserved for Microsoft's IE coders....

Anyway, tidying up some code then we're off to Wincanton in an hour! See some of you there. Look for the rock'n'roll Druids Very Happy
