Re: top ten books of all time.

Bronze Member

I've limited myself to a single book per author*...

Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Bicentenial Man - Issac Asimov
Espedair Street - Iain Banks
The Algebraist - Iain M Banks (*okay I cheated with the only one per author - but he does write sci-fi under a slightly different name!)
Mars - Ben Bova
Dune - Frank Herbert
Magic Cottage - James Herbert
The Stand - Stephen King
Partisans - Alistair MacLean
Nightwatch - Terry Pratchett (Knew there had to be one of those in there!)

That's how it stands at this moment in time - who knows what I'll read tomorrow? Wink

Re: top ten books of all time.

In a random order:

Dune - Frank Herbert
Enders game (or the entire ender saga) - Orson Scott Card
Foundation trilogy - Isaac Asimov
I, Robot - Isaac Asimov
1984 - George Orwell
Focault's s sling? (don't now how it is called in English in dutch its "de slinger van Focault") - Umberto Eco
In the name of the Rose - Umberto Eco
De/the Alchemist - Paulo Coelho
Thud? (we're on a Discworld forum afterall) Laughing Razz - I just can't remember the author of that book...
and one of my favorites when i was little: "Meester van de Zwarte molen (Krabat)" its children-fantasy by Otfried Preussler

mmm, this makes 2 SciFi readers. I wonder how many people dont read scifi

Oh my! I had forgotten about those - have you read the full set? (I would have chosen Silver on the Tree as my favourite of that series, with The Dark is Rising as a close second)

I only let myself read the series once a year, over christmas... otherwise I'd probably have read them about 80-100 times Smile

Re: top ten books of all time.

Interesting. I like reading and discussing books. Here's my list, in no particular order (except for what sprang to mind first):

A Clockwork Orange - by Anthony Burgess
The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - by Douglas Adams
Cryptonomicon - by Neal Stephenson
Cloud Atlas - by David Mitchell
Starfarers - by Poul Anderson
True History of the Kelly Gang - by Peter Carey
The Unconsoled - Kazuo Ishiguro
Time's Arrow - by Martin Amis
Oh, Play that thing! - by Roddy Doyle
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - by Susanna Clarke
Das Glasperlenspiel - by Hermann Hesse
Thud! - by Terry Pratchett
and any book by Salman Rushdie

Rushdie and Mitchell should probably be on top of the list.
All books that made a serious enough impression that I can still vividly remember "scenes", and certainly "atmosphere" and style. Or message.
And a lot of Bookers in there, or at least shortlisters or previous winners. No surprise, not to me anyway. The Booker Prize is still the greatest achievement anyone can get in literature[ *], and if any particular book has been on the shortlist it is certain to be the best you can get.

Indeed! The story is great, and the book gives a very good idea how people with ASS (Autism Spectrum Syndrome) think and feel. I work with people with ASS, and this book had some insights even I didn't know.

[ *] According to me. And yes I still call it The Booker Prize. No man can force me to call it anything else Laughing.

Oooooh - I forgot about the Dark Elf trilogies! I think I've read all the Drizzt Do'Urden books about a dozen times each!

Choosing just 10 books would be really hard!
