There was a rumour in a German newspaper that said he would lose his magic powers. They were not very sure about that, though.

Personally speaking, I feel Angua has a good point - The Discworld is there for when you outgrow things like Harry Potter. I think that in 100 years people will still read Terry Pratchett but will ask why there was a such a fuss about Harry Potter and how did it manage to sell so many books.

frankly i have to agree with angua on this one,i couldn't be bothered to read any harry potter book,it seems to be not the style i would like,i still watch the movies and enjoy them on some level, but the books are way too much of a las for me [las means effort].

Well, it could either be the classic Hollywood ending (Harry defeats Voldemort and his minions, marries Hermione, gets job to replace Dumbledore, they live happily ever after), or...... there could be a twist! Harry slays Hermione and his friends, marries Voldemort, gets him elected to replace Dumbledore, and they live happily ever after.

You know... I think you're right. I find myself totally not caring. Neither possibility matters to me at all. I didn't grow up with him, and I don't really care if he lives, dies, goes to the good or the bad.

HP is a "growing-up-with" thing. Back in my day we had Adrian Mole. People nowadays who read the whole Mole series in an anthology wouldn't "get" it, wouldn't understand why it was popular at the time. But rereading it now, it's trite twaddle. So for those who grew up with Harry, I suspect that there'll be no returning to the 1990s and 2000s, no showing their children "look at what unfolded here".

The Chronicles of Narnia have survived the test of time quite well, maybe because they had a timeless setting, and on that stage they told a timeless story.

Are the Potter books timeless? I think they may date rapidly.

Are Pratchett's books timeless? I think the Johnny books may also date rapidly, but the Discworld ones? I think they may be. As with Narnia and the Shire, he has the advantage that he is not setting it in the modern world. He also has the advantage that he is a damn fine author. Even the simplest of his characters has a great depth to them. His books have a greater re-read value than any two other fantasy/sci-fi authors I can think of. I can very rarely re-read a book by anyone else, because the second time round with most authors, you're spotting the plot flaws. With Pratchett, you're usually spotting deeper subtleties.
