Points (new topic)

i was just wondering about the system of gaining and losing points on the site,

for example how you can gain points? and how do they get taken away?

cheers

Re: Points

Admin

Posting content to the site gets you points. Posting interesting content (like story contests, comics, etc.) gets you LOTS of points.

As soon as the new Thudclient is stable we'll turn on the points system so that people earn lotsa points for playing Thud online (and apply it retroactively to past games as well so it's important people register Shocked)

Some people do very well just by posting to the forums; others have been "volunteered" for special duties on the site and we pay them a "Thudpoints salary" every month (OK, in theory... sometimes we forget, like recently, so we bung them a load of points all at once Neutral one of these days we'll get round to getting the cron job sorted...)

Very soon now (as we've been saying for 6 months or so... Neutral ) we will be featuring cool stuff you'll be able to spend points on so keep earning away Very Happy

As far as having points taken away, the only way they have been (to my knowledge) is having a post deleted, or changed authorship (AFAIK this has only happened to me and to admin who are, for all intents and porpoises, the same person) or have it tagged as spam (same as deletion). I'm not aware of anyone losing points otherwise. Mind you, Dewi did code a gambling module into the online client... Wink

Re: Points

i understand that posting into forums gets you points but how many points would you get for each posting, and how many points would you get for creating a new forum?

do you currently get points for playing thud? and how many if you do? do you get any even if you lose etc etc

sorry for being such a pest

Re: Points

Didn't we have an old topic "points"???

Re: Points

Druid

We probably did have a topic explainin points, but the basics:

1 point for a comment
2 points for creating a forum

you get more points for submitting blogs and images and reviews etc.
have a route around in the thudding drum and try and find the old topic.

obviously mr alley and mr morgan can give and take points at will, but druids can also take points away by deleting your comments and topics, if we see fit.

Re: Points

I found the old "points" and you can get points for things I don't know what they are...(here are all ways to get ponts but how can I post a biography???)

Points for posting a biography: 5
Points for posting a blog entry: 1
Points for posting a book page: 1
Points for posting a book review: 15
Points for posting a event: 1
Points for posting a forum topic: 2
Points for posting a help tip: 5
Points for posting a image: 1
Points for posting a movie review: 10
Points for posting a page: 1
Points for posting a poll: 1
Points for posting a story: 1
Points for posting a comment: 1
Points for moderating a comment: 0
Points for referring a user: 2
Points for inviting a user: 2
Points when invited user registers: 5

Re: Points

Admin

OK there have been a few changes since I posted that originally (for one thing we disabled the biography module as it was giving so many problems! Sad ) The new list (for the moment) is this:

Thudpoints for posting a Blog entry: 5
Thudpoints for posting a Event: 5
Thudpoints for posting a FAQ: 5
Thudpoints for posting a Forum topic: 2
Thudpoints for posting a Image: 2
Thudpoints for posting a Poll: 1
Thudpoints for posting a Review: 15
Thudpoints for posting a Story: 50
Thudpoints for posting a comment: 1

(Note: reviews and stories subject to moderation - if it's rubbish it gets re-written or deleted. No big-points for writing any-old-thing)

Now some of these everyone can do, some of them you have to be a member to do and some of them only Druids and above can do. If you can do it it will be in the list on the left-hand side of the page, possibly under "Create Content".

Now, Mr Scrub mentioned content ratings whereby folks vote content up/down based on how they feel about it. This may or may not be able to be tied into the userpoints code but is the best chance at doing that. What do people think about community rating schemes? On the plus side it keeps people involved in the site and active for much longer. On the downside it can create a normative style and feel to the site (a la groupthink mentality) and gives more power to the more active members of the group. It is, however, fundamentally democratic. But is it us? Shocked Puzzled:

1. a blog entry is more like an anouncement i would say, but noramally it would be an account of something you did or you are interested in. that is made redundant by the thudding drum tho. So, like i mentioned, they are only really used here as announcements.

2.email a druid your story and we shall see what we can do Smile i dont think you can post your own. Same for reviews as well

hope this helps

Probably the best way to find out what sort of review would be accepted would be to have a look at existing ones - see the right hand navigation column. (Tho one thing I'd personally recommend before you start writing one would be to investigate those interesting punctuation characters at the side of the keyboard Razz... sorry, I couldn't resist it...)

a topic: things you post into, for example, the thudding drum eg ("its the coolest sig contest", "more words than...")

a story- it is what it is basically. a story. "once upon a time" and all that business.

Smile

i think

Re: Points

A topic is just like this - could be a load of nonsense, or not even very much nonsense. A story is exactly that - a piece of creative writing... For examples on that, there was a story competition run a few months back - see the Sto Lat team's entry, and the Sto Helit team's entry

Mr Scrub

EDIT: Ponder beat me to it, but I hope the links are still helpful.

to be honest i have no idea. if you have something you dont know where to put it, stick it in a .txt or word file and email it to a druid or admin. they will happily shove it in somewhere Smile
